Will pokemon ever have a Sonic Mania-like game? There are plenty of fangame/romhack devs they could collab with, and a return to sprites would be nice. Game Freak also needs to rebuild their reputation

Maybe, but not soon.
Pokemon has gotten worse, but 3D Pokemon games are fucking masterpieces compared to 3D Sonic games.
Maybe if Pokemon gets so bad that even normalfags can't stomach it, GF might get desperate enough to hire fangame creators.

The problem with Sonic is that its gameplay has changed too much. The problem with Pokemon is that its gameplay hasn't changed enough.

The game and the way it's presented hasn't changed since 1997. We're still stuck imagining the Pokemon battles in our heads.

Another good point, in terms of improvements that a fanmade game could make I was thinking of stuff like better dungeon design and game progression while carrying over the QoL improvements introduced by the more recent entries

Game Freak outsourced a lot of asset creation to £D modelers, hired on new staff at Game Freak HQ, all were proven by the increased number of staff listed in Sword/Shield's credits and here you re crying because your headcanon just got smashed.
