You ever realize Pokemon started very sci-fi based but then moved more and more toward fantasy elements?
In gen1 there are labs, cloning, power plants, digital pokemon like Porygon, mechanical pokemon like Magnemite, TMs/HMs. What made Pokemon shift from science to fantasy?

It plays around with both to varying degrees. Even in gen 1 there were all the ghosts and stuff. The legends for Gen 4 might be more mystical or mythical, but anything to do with Team Galactic is very technology focused. Same can be said of Gen 5, especially BW2 between Colress's inventions, stuff like Ghetsis's controlling staff, Genesect, and so on. Gen 6 mixed it even more with the weaponry and nukes, only powered by spiritual life forces and stuff.

I've noticed that too.
I think gen 1 was meant to take place in a "realer", more grounded, world (relatively speaking).
It makes references to real places, with Kanto being an actual part of Japan, Lt. Surge being explicitly American, and Mew being from South America. As well as Dex entires and offhand dialogue mentioning real animals, like dex entries mentioning Pokemon preying on real animals, the S.S. Anne serving normal meat, and the artwork for the Old Amber featuring a regular mosquito.
This could also explain why gen 1 Normal types have such good movepools. It could've been a way to further distinguish them from regular animals, while the "literally my mom's" animals in later gens don't need that distinction.

I’ve always just thought that they blew their load early with a lot of novel concepts which is part of why people flocked to Pokemon to begin with. Over time they seemed to shift the elements more towards archeology/myths and they also switched the setting from some kind of near future Earth to a totally new world with weird timeline shit for added measure. The giant success of Pokemon in its early stages let them do whatever they wanted with it because we’d buy it anyway and I think the setting change and tone shifts were all part of a plan to sterilize the series a bit. Maybe they did it out of a perceived obligation to be careful with what the world’s kids would see with each drawn out release. At least we get a few things every once in a while like Type: Null or the Ultra Beasts.

I agree but wouldnt call it fantasy shift, first gens seemed more down-to-earth and sci-fi elements were a little darker but this was kinda a thing in 90s. Also topics seemed more mature with all cloning and mewtwo concept, but then they had to tone down stuff because muh kids, now they treat young audience like everything needs to be colorful and edgy.

I did. They’re shown to be destructive and volatile to the normal Pokemon dimension which might as well be Earth and I liked the presentation style of helping Looker and PokeInterpol or whatever it was called. The different home worlds could have been cooler but overall it got me back into Pokemon where the rest of the faults in gen 7 almost sent me off for good. I think they did a good job of making them feel like bizarro Pokemon leaking from somewhere else.

Yeah, it was definitely low-sci fi, and was inspired by all the popular stuff back in the day. The fossil Pokemon were literally just there because of Jurassic Park. Even the way it handled the mythical stuff was very /x/ tier. Psychics and ESPers were studied, ghosts were hunted with technology. It was a cool setting.

Aside from the genre and setting shift like other anons have mentioned, it's just about marketability, but also happenstance.

Gen 2 went for a more traditional setting, which works great for the themes of the game. Tradition and myth conflicting (or coinciding) with technology, progress and change. It invented the more mythological Legendary Pokemon. That said, I don't think it's to blame for the genre shift since it still feels very in-line with Gen 1's setting, and the "legendaries" it had were purely legends which conflicted with one another, and completely mundane by the standards we have now. It was Gen 3 which solidified it with Ruby/Sapphire introducing Pokegods, and the whole "Pokemon takes place on Earth and there are real animals and so on" being gone entirely by Gen 4-5.

The diary entry says that Mew gave birth, but now that we know that Pokemon reproduce through eggs instead of giving birth, cloning makes more sense. So it can be handwaved away as Mew metaphorically giving birth.

Fossil revival in Pokemon is always portrayed as literally recreating the organism that left behind the fossil. It's not perfect (Tyrantrum is missing its feathers), but it's still the same creature and they have memories of their past lives. It's not a clone.

There are plenty of Pokedex entries that still mention animals and stuff in those gens, and Village Bridge is a song that's literally about seagulls. It's only on the Switch games that real-world references were written out entirely

Literally the only dex entry in recent years to mention real world animals is Raichu's in Sun.

Real animals and locations don't exist in the Pokemon universe anymore and haven't since Gen 1 ended.

Mew specifically is a Pokemon that doesn't breed for eggs though. The biggest against it though is that there's no motive to clone Mew at all. In other media, Mewtwo's a clone because Mew was so rare that they could only get trace DNA of it. But Mr. Fuji got his hands on an actual Mew, so to spend months just to clone it makes no sense. It makes more sense that it was pregnant when he got it, and found potential to use the baby for his experiment. Hence why they made the parallel of him taking care of the Cubone child that lost its mother, and being enraged at Team Rocket for tearing apart a family

If I remember correctly there was a scraped idea for Gen 6's plot. It was about aliens or some shit, I don't remember quite well. I know we got UBs in Gen 7 but it's just not the same.

Most of Huntail's entries reference animals, with HGSS even saying that it acts like an "animal" outright

Also, that manual is not a story-based one, but a marketing approval one. It says stuff like "there is no food chain" even though we have mentions of Sneasel eating Pidgey eggs, or "Pokemon never die" when we have cemeteries and Ghost Marowak in the games and even the Stoutland episode in the anime. It's not literally saying that there are no animals, but for advertisers to "play pretend" that there are no animals and not to mention them, because it would detract from the focus on Pokemon

"Fish" and "snake" are referring to Pokemon. Gen 7's dex makes multiple mentions of "fish Pokemon". They're referring to the Pokemon that are considered "snakes", not real life snakes.

I don't think Pokemon being turned into literal data has been mentioned since Gen 1.

Gen 7 had your Pokemon go to Poke Pelago instead, and Gen 8 has the Poke Jobs thing.

They seem to have adopted the anime's thing where Pokemon are just kept somewhere else and the Poke Ball is transferred to the trainer when they call for it instead of them literally being stored in the PC as data.

I feel like Gen 6 had a reference to that line, but I can't find a script dump anywhere. Gen 3 and 4 definitely kept the same data theme though, since the storage creators were friends of Bill's, and Bill shows up in the remakes for those gens too.
For Gen 7, the Pokemon can go from the PC Boxes to the Pelago, they don't directly go there.

The ORAS manga adaptation explains them as containing the "essence" of that move. This is the only time we're ever given any explanation on how TMs work. The games never explain it, and in the anime, Pokemon just learn the moves the same way they learn any other move; normally as they grow strong (leveling up), or undergoing specific training for it.

Then there is no explanation of what the PC really is. If the pokemon were permanently data though, as long as they were inside, then it wouldn't say "release". It would say delete or something. And despite the save data basiclaly deleting the pokemon data, they still say release.

I read somewhere that one idea behind Pokémon was that they were extraterrestrial/lunar in origin, and that they just showed up at some point in our world, which is why research into evolution/eggs/etc. is presented as such a new and groundbreaking thing

That fluxuates from region to region.
Some are more technologically developed, while others are more traditional.
Doesn't help that the first region was based off of Tokyo, which is the most technologically advanced city in the world.

This has always been my headcannon. A lot of ambiguous things in the series seem to have actual explanations from way back in early gen 1 but were lost to time. For example, pokemon weren't the only thing held in balls, but rather almost everything could be stored in balls for convenience, kinda like how in dragon ball a lot of stuff too big to carry around was stored in little capsules. This is why items in the overworld were displayed as pokeballs and why you could carry around things like a bike. I don't remember the source tho, I read it from a source posted by an anon in a thread a little while back

It's always a nice thought experiment to imagine what Pokemon would be like now if BW were successful. I feel like those games were basically conceived as Kanto 2.0, from the soft reboot in Pokemon availability to the vastly different tone it had from its predecessors. It would be interesting to experience a timeline where XY followed in its footsteps a la GSC to RBY.

But what would you expect in this case? XY got shit on by its release cycle far more than Masuda getting butthurt about BW flopping, and had it carried on any of the same "risks" I don't think they'd be better games.

I don't really buy this "if you didn't buy/praise BW you killed Pokémon" bullshit in general either, considering how little of a fuck they've always given about fanbase opinions in general for most of the series' history.

I don't think it majorly affected it, but I do think BW being the lowest selling games did have an impact on future development of games. I don't know if it branches as far as say, if BW had succeeded, the games would be hugely different and would less kiddy easy shit, I do think it made a difference in say how they integrate new pokemon and the distribution of them compared with older mons.

I just feel like XY were deliberately scaled down in ambition to perform better sales-wise, and the game probably would've come out totally different had the approach they took with BW (content-packed and with an actual story) become the new standard instead of the barebones, Kanto-pandering low-effort design philosophy they adopted after BW floundered.

I really don't think the story got cut out because of deadlines. The deadline excuse is understandable for deficiencies in the actual gameplay and dungeon layout, but implementing a story isn't really that labor intensive. I'm pretty sure it was cut simply because Gamefreak feared alienating too much of its audience (and i'm sure having literal aliens in the game would've had this effect). The only reason they could get away with aliens in USUM is because it's an upper version and only the diehard autists buy those, not the casual player who would be seriously puzzled by aliens in their pokemon game.

Not so much "force" as in make the whole dex or most of the in game one new mons, but at least represented more like in the wild. Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but it seemed like gens 3 and 4 had way better new mon representation than at least 7 did, though part of that could also be less new mons in general as they approach, or shit probably passed 1000 mons. Did SM not have UBs? I feel like I am missing something. The story itself might not have been hard to write but it would have still required plenty of content, dialogue and scripted events to support it. I can completely see how they could have run out of time on it, and I can't see how aliens is really that outlandish for a Pokémon game. Sounds like cool shit for some 10 year old.

I'm talking about the Ultra Recon Squad. The UBs are technically aliens but because they're still "pokemon" their inclusion wouldn't seem as jarring. If all the boomers on facebook complained about BW then I doubt they would've tolerated actual humanoid aliens in the franchise (and apparently they were so loud they caused GF to change course for an entire decade)

What they can learn from TMs is still limited by what they're physically capable of doing. TMs are just a potential shortcut, the same result can be achieved by training, or them just learning the move on their own.

Shoving dark elements haphazardly doesn't make properly dark or well written. Lusamine's basic story arch is fine, I'll give you that one and also I don't remember much about Sun/Moon and never played Ultras, but XY did it horribly.

XY was just this goofy and sickeningly upbeat story that includes watching fireworks with some random girl and having a huge group of friends that suddenly goes "OMG POKEMON GENOCIDE AND MURDER BY THE THOUSANDS" out of nowhere, and then it's completely dropped afterwards. It's awkward and unearned that I partly feel was forced in to try and claim it's more mature than it is. It's the equivalent to asking a 6 year old half way in the story to make something "super duper dark".

Gen 1 and even later gens like Gen 5 at least had a consistent tone so when the dark elements were shown they didn't feel forced but instead completely natural and cohesive.
