Not everybody emulated back then and even less possessed money for the pricey capture technology of that era. Even if people knew better, the mystique of the waning days of internet scarcity allowed for a great many casual users to be fooled more than once, and often for long amounts of time. I had several friends who bought shit like that and that was even before D/P and within a relatively well-off community where most already possessed internet access. Anon said it was a different time, but a more appropriate answer would be that it was a product of the times.
