>>43239473Representation wise? It's pretty bad. The Chus + Mewtwo are alright and Trainer is one of the best characters in the game while also being one of the best showcases of a franchise's home roots but ever since it's just been "anthro animal-likes" which, while understandably a lot easier to work with in a fighting game, really doesn't do a good job of getting across the insane amount of variety there is in Pokemon. From an outsider perspective, it really looks like most of Pokemon is just anthros. I also think Incineroar was a pretty bad inclusion that feels like it was added just for the sake of having a Pokemon rep.
Gameplay wise? Pokemon honestly has a lot of my least favourites characters bar Trainer (though fighting Ivysaur can be hell) and the explosive Pichu. Pikachu's always been a fantastic, dynamic yet annoying character but the changes they made to it in Ult really brought out the annoying side more than anything and all the fun went away. Jigglypuff is too linear and a Jigglypuff on screen guarantees the match will be slow. Mewtwo ends up really gimmicky with its awkward double jump + its specials, but the worst thing about it has to be the tail. Doesn't feel rewarding to hit its huge ass tailbox and feels even worse if you're the Mewtwo. Lucario has the aura mechanic. End of discussion. Greninja can be really fun and I love seeing the technical aspect of it come out but at anything lower than top level play Greninja just becomes a spammy character that fishes for the same setups 24/7, which is just a snoozefest - the character suffers a lot more from its players than it does its actual kit but regardless it causes me to feel disgruntled whenever I see I'm fighting one. Lastly, Incineroar just encourages a lame gameplan. Like most heavies, the way to beat it is to play lame and Incineroar happens to be one of the most exploitable. Fun with friends when you're just holding in, terrible against people you don't know or when playing to win.
