2D sprites (gen 1 - 5)

A large region with culture and history surrounding the legendary pokemon (Hoenn and Sinnoh)
and not just a "theme park" full of random cities without a common theme like Unova

Memorable NPCs that aren't just for porn and memes (every gen prio to gen 6)

A good national dex with a good blend of old and new pokemon (Not Sinnoh)

An easy way to transfer old pokemon forward or trade national-dex pokemon (arguably only present in gens 4 -7)

Pokemon never had memorable NPCs, though. Every "iconic" Pokemon character was because of the anime, porn (Cynthia), or memes (Prof. Oak). Ask anyone about the Kanto gym leaders and they will probably tell you something about them that the anime invented.

Yeah, Surge is pretty much the only one I remember based on anything somewhat interesting about them as a character, and of course that cool Gen 1 storyline angle has been completely retconned out of existence so every NPC is boring shit now.

I grew up on those games and the most I can tell you about Lance is that his team has too many of the same Pokemon and that he fights Team Rocket. Which is genuinely a pitiful short list of character history and traits.

NPCs in previous games interacted with the player, modern NPCs sit in their gym and wait to be challenged, then disappear forever. We can all remember annoying rivals and champions but also characters like Lance and Alder that appear all over the place. Then we have garbage like Leon showing up "lost" everywhere and doing nothing for the player, only being noticed because the game's narrative forces him into a role of popularity among npcs

This applies to every Gen 1 gym leader and probably over half the Gen 2-4 leaders.

I'm not talking about only gym leaders though. SwSh just has so few NPCs that you need to count gym leaders for there to be more than ten NPCs, and the gym leaders are incredibly flat and dull apart for the fairy lady.

Brock, literally the first gym leader ever, does nothing except sit in his gym and then he never shows up again. Meanwhile, the Galar gym leaders show up outside of their gyms many times due to story, post game, tournament, etc. what is your point?

Actually a nice point in Let's Go pikachu/eevee is that they bring Lorelei and other e-four members into the story more often, but gens 1-5 at least had more memorable champions than gens 6 through 8. SwSh also has no real evil team, and even though Skull was similar they're at least their own faction and not just fans of a rival that act as roadblocks.

If you count everyone that talks at you outside of a gym no matter how measly and non-essential it is (which is the vast bulk of them) then that would still allow one to add all of the gym leaders and challengers of SwSh to the comparison, and once again, it would be frankly about the same.
