Why do you care so much about "shillmons"?
They are more marketed, yes, but you don't HAVE to use them. Just use the ones you like

This is a term made by people who don’t play anything other than Pokémon and don’t understand that more time and effort are put into some designs as a way to market them, but that just means more time and effort went into making the Pokémon, and it’s more likely to be well received, ultimately meaning they are usually better pokemon both in design and in practice.
But there’s nothing wrong with it in theory, the problem is when they keep revisiting it instead of expanding on other ideas or even giving older things love.

1. They overstay their welcome and thus end up taking the spotlight even in new gens when the new Pokémon should be the ones getting love.
2. Starters should be equal to each other, at least within the same region, yet since XY they started shilling one starter over their colleagues. Charizard, Greninja, Blaziken to an extent.
3. Features that could've been used to prop up the popularity of less popular Pokémon were instead used to make already popular Pokémon even more popular.
4. If a shillmon ends up not being popular, Gamefreak/TPC will quickly abandon it. However, is a non-shillmon ends up being really popular organically, they'll ignore it and keep on shilling the same mons.

The only time a shillmont really annoyed me was when they made Charizard the only flying option in gen 7. They should have used a regional flying type or something more natural like on of the many big birds, it felt so forced seeing a pokemon like that, and a starter to boot, every time I used flying.

For the most part, I don’t mind shillmons, it’s when gamefreak/ Pokemon company forced them down our throats or when they artificially make them popular is when it becomes an issue.

Charizard is an example of the former where while it did earn its popularity back in the day, the blatant pandering by giving it a lot of forms, too much attention and in gen 8s case no NPC would shuts the fuck up about it, all of these factors will become tiresome overtime even if you like Charizard.

The latter issue mainly applies to the likes of Incinaroar, Cinderace and Greninja (and maybe Lucario to some extent as it’s probably the first real instance of this issue) where they deliberately put effort into making them the best choice over the others unlike in the past where every Pokemon has to earn its shillmon status by their own merits (Charizard and Mewtwo for example wether you like it or not did at least earned their status as a shillmon). It’s even more obnoxious with Incinaroar because with that one, the forced popularity strategy backfired unlike Greninja because people generally liked Decidueye (and Rowlet) far more than Incinaroar which caused people to hate Incinaroar as Gamefreak/Pokemon company’s attempt to artificially make it popular was more blatant unlike with Greninja where it’s public reception and developer intent of making it popular just so happen to align perfectly for Greninja to well liked by the audience (at least that’s what I think is the reason).

The shilling for all three happened in XY though. Charizard getting two Megas, Greninja getting the Ash-Greninja form in the anime, and Blaziken being a free gift in XY while also getting a Mega while Sceptile/Swampert didn't. Before that, even in say, gen 5, all the Kanto starters were given out in the Dream World with a Hidden Ability, and same for the Hoenn ones. They were equal.

There isn't even a shillmon.
Pikachu was picked as mascot because he could appeal to boys and girls. Clefairy would mostly just appeal to girls.
Charizard, Lucario, & Greninja were fan favorites and were given lovable and appealing designs that helped them.
