You do realise that VGC has to make teams for the whole tournament and not for each game right? Smogon would look almost as bad if they weren't allowed to switch to any team they want for every match, or between games in a best of X series.

Removing the best and most centralizing options means that players have to get creative.
It's disappointing that they kept shit like Toxapex in, and that they brought Incineroar back, and that they're gonna bring Landorus back, but cutting the dex was a good idea in theory if they would've actually thought it through.

How did the increasingly steep competition (non-aloladex mons in '18 and box legends in '19) make it more viable instead of less?

Competitivefags think that they are Pokemon experts but they can't handle a guy using a different team. They are only ready to face the same mons again and again.
That's why when something like dexcut happen, they are completely fucked and can't stop whining about it.

For tournaments, you're doing a best of 3, which means that even if you win one round, your opponent knows what you're up to and can easily stop your cheese in the other 2. You're also not just doing one battle, but many battles using the same team. You need to not just win, but win consistently.
The reason why VGC teams all look the same is because VGC players (the ones who win, at least) go with the safer options that'll net them consistent victories.
