Since most people are focussed more on the source code and because I have no useful knowledge of how to help with it, I've been having a little play around with the debug features of the GS ROMs. Found three mini-games, one is the regular slots from the Game Corner, one is the Shinkei memory-test match that is also in the Spaceworld ROMs, and one is pic related. Were the two non-slots games included in the final versions or am I just being dozy?

Keep researching it for unused graphics and data.

pokered has 248 map constants counting the unused gap ones. There are 275 SXY files (aka mapObjects in pokered). That's at least 27 unused ones to match up with early map designs.

I don't really have the skills to track down some guy that made a post in 2007 on a brazilian game development forum
Besides the only links I can see are to the cgb_sdk that we already have so they probably wouldn't have much else, and I guess they probably got it from IS/ninty themselves since not many other places mentioned that URL, so doubt they'd ever want to share.

Fuck I just wish IA had tried scanning the actual /archive/ folder itself, who knows what else it could have grabbed.

Largely because this came from a server hack and because this new series of leaks contains several confidential documents, not just ROMs.

Also no one at TCRF knew where the Spaceworld 1997 demo came from until a year after it was leaked.

the "patched" source code posted here, used by some person to make the compilation work have some problem.
Compilation work for unmodified code, but they broken something and because of that, it's impossible to compile a debug rom.

if someone want to take a look, just use the yellow_ezbuild zip and modify source/pm_debug.def to set "pm_debug" to "1". compilation will not work at the isx to gb part (with conv.bat) because of this error.
So, if the original anon that made the yellow source code patch see this and can do something, that can be cool :)

If the hack was limited to NOA materials, I would say the translation effort for the original Red and Blue versions is going to be the furthest back you can go with all these leaks. NOA would have been sent Pokemon Blue or even some later revision of the Pokemon engine to translate.

We're lucky some of the source code hadn't been cleaned up and there were several interesting finds there, but an in development Red or Green version would have solely been on Gamefreak's own PCs. After it became a global phenomenon of course Nintendo of America would be getting preview versions of newer games, thus things like a demo build of "Pokemon 2" ended up on their servers.

Brainlet here. During the Spaceworld leaks people were able to use code of the leak to fill in missing data people considered junk for years. I believe the unknown shiny animation was an example of something usable in the final version? Will the source code leaks be able to fill any junk code and trigger new things to work too?

The Silph Chief actually seems to have been meant to be sitting in the middle of the Safari Zone where the Surf HM Dealer in the final is, going by map names, so I'd think maybe a Safari Zone-themed team could work too.

If that's the case, then the "Spaceworld" ROM that we have may not be even the actual SW97 demo but a slightly different build of the game.

This is somehow backed up by the written accounts of the event back from the day, which mention some Pokemon that aren't in the ROM, such as "Eleking" (which we know is real because that name exists in cry data headers something like that).

I wonder how "generous" the Japanese were in providing NoA with those preview versions. We know that at least a Pearl demo exists, from Gynox's drama. There are also rumors about someone having an SW99 demo, but how confirmed is that? (I'm afraid it might have been a misconception based on those GS debugs, wrongly interpreted as "beta roms")

If Capumon beta builds are outruled and we'll never see more than we already did, then SW99 is the only thing I care about. Also, I'd love to see a similar documentation for the English localization of GS.

If "they" really have that stuff I guess we will see them sooner or later. The hoarders will probably just stop caring at some point, especially if ninjas are after them anyway.

Interesting so he was meant to appear in both the Safari Zone and the Silph Co., not sure if he was meant to be fought in the Safari but likely in the Silph since he is the boss of the building, Giovanni has three teams so after defeating him perhaps Giovanni would arrive to deal with Red after the Chief was defeated?, whose battle sprite which was used for Gym Blaine

Yeah, but that not the question here :)
If the compilation with debug originally worked, there is a possibility to make it work.
And since i can't find the reason of the bug in the code, i simply asked for help to anons who already played with the source code and can eventually know the problem. I'm sure we can fix it. And after that we can make fully debug enabled builds.

These debug features they're talking about might be the monster_maker and monster_maker2 functions in the debug code. They're unreferenced anywhere in the code. The first one lets you make a pokemon with the same ui as in the g/s debugs. The second fills your pc up with every pokemon.

Yellow was made after that. with mew already included from the original blue/green jp source code. Since we have debug builds of US yellow, the debug func can be enabled. That why i think the problem came from the modification done after the leak to make the project compile.

It probably wouldn't be too difficult to slot in a new pokemon, maybe explains why they made it event-only too, since it wouldn't need any special battle-testing or anything.

Also it seems the debug code has different sections that can be turned on/off, maybe they didn't need the full debug stuff to test, who knows.

Silph Chief and Silph President may have not been the same person, different terms are used for them in Japanese.

In the translation files, the HM03 giver from Safari Zone Secret House is pretty explicitly named "Silph's Chief" and the in-game dialogue (a normal one, not cut content) talks about the HM quest being a "promotional campaign", likely run by Silph to advertise the HM (as we know from in-game dialogues, TMs and HMs are Silph products).

So yeah, the Chief is in the game and he was always there. They just cut his battle and probably changed his role (from "villain hiding in the jungle" to "company employee running a promotional quest").

The President was likely meant to not be fightable in both scripts except he previously was meant to likely being arrested after Giovanni leaves the building since Silph was originally the Scientist Base of Team Rocket after the Mansion as the Manga also shows that Silph is corrupt while in the final version you save him from said team, giving you the Master Ball

Oops no I'm retarded, it uses kabubone for monsc182 & putebone for monsc183, monsc184 gets used as-is. Got confused because yellow had stuff in a different place.

These are the memory comments I mentioned, if the monsc* ones match up with the replacements maybe it was just optimization, otherwise if they're different maybe they were just tracking memory usage while they were replacing the sprites

They both seem to be worked on at the same time. MONSTER.DMB was modified by the same guy (tama) at the same period of time but he made two different sets of changes.

The source control history for these projects would be amazing.

Take a look at the last few posts in the old thread, they use some ancient ISDMG assembler that nobody can track down atm, only been able to compile with the newer ISAS assembler which needs some code changes and might be breaking shit

Both Blue and Yellow shared development time with GS.
Blue's front sprites seem to be taken from a very early GS. They use the prefix PM2F (Pocket Monsters 2 Front?). Many of them are still used in the Space World demo.

isdmg is an ancient assembler used to assemble assembly. Ya dig? isas is a newer version and the only one we have. The source code was designed for isdmg, so modifications have to be made to use them with isas.

Yeah, ISAS is from GBC SDK which is easy to find, ISDMG is from gameboy SDK that only ancientfags would have.
There's been work to make it compile with ISAS but it has problems compiling debug mode for some reason.
Ideally we'd track down the exact versions >>43276218 so we could reproduce a build, but who knows if we'll ever get hold of those

so legend says wack0 got all these files from a digital nintendo server archive, but does this really apply for the japanese pokemon diamond debug build that got leaked last year? i noticed that in the rom from 0x1000 to 0x3FFF it's all zeroes. this is a protected rom area which can't be read from by homebrew tools. by specification this data must be present in all roms with a game code other than "NTRJ" and this one is "ADAJ". this can also be verified with the wii u virtual console roms and dsiware roms.

when using the official sdk you can either use the "NTRJ" template or a nintendo-provided one for your game code. given the header doesn't say "NTRJ" it doesn't make any sense the protected area is just zeroes and it's strong evidence that it was dumped using homebrew tools from a physical cart, not copied from the digital archive.

so i wonder where did it come from?

Purpose of the game is to catch 150 unique Pokemon species. The Pokedex counts as complete when you've done this. I know this because one play through, I caught 149 Pokemon and then Mew, totalling 150, and it still counted as complete. Got the diploma and everything. Mew was also always a secret and never necessary for completion, since catching the actual first 150 gets you the completed Pokedex as well.

Sprites get decompressed into SRAM, invalid MissingNo sprite can get decompressed to data which is too large, and overwrites save data. This has been known for years.

Is that all you meant? Once you've already done a glitch that tries to interpret invalid data, coding assumptions about data size/layout are broken. That's not "bad coding" that's literally 100% of all video games made before 2000 when every last byte of memory had to be saved.

The real glitch with MissingNo isn't really the result of bad programming, but actually tile data. The issue is that you can Surf on tiles which allow you to get encounters, but which don't update the encounter list. If they didn't exist, then there would be no glitches.

Eh, putting your decompression buffer right above save data of all things, and not even having any boundary checks to boot, is pretty bad programming IMO, that's just asking for something to go bad, if anything they're lucky it was only HoF stuff that got wrecked.

If they're using that as extra RAM they should have just moved some hardly used static-sized variables there instead, and put the compression buffer in WRAM, would probably speed up the decompression too.

Or at least put it after all the important save data instead, pretty stupid to put that right in the path of a non-bounds-checked buffer.

So, there are 11 roms in the yellow directory. 8 of them are all named after dates (y9902XX.bin), and they are all very similar when I compared them with a hex editor. I believe these are daily bugfixes. The other 3 are USRED.bin, YELLMONS.bin, and apse00-0.gb. The final one of these was in a folder called "final" and is identical to the NA release of yellow. From comparing YELLMONS.bin and apse00-0.gb to the y9902XX.bin files and each other, I think the three groups have different bank organization, as the comparison tool on my hex editor throws up around ~40,000 changes.

Well I'd think that after the save data would be fine, unless GB does weird shit if you write past the SRAM region or something, even then a crash would be preferable to a save data corruption IMO.

Yeah true, we wouldn't even need to worry about this if they'd just checked the pokemon IDs at least, probably don't need to worry about checking stuff much when all of your data is programmed into the game though (besides player name etc)

Whoever it is that has access to things is almost certainly using NOA resources. The Pokemon Blue source files we have are showing signs of being worked on past the Japanese Blue in preparation for Yellow, Pink, and "Pokemon 2"

There could be all sorts of things Gen 2 onward from translation archives but it's highly unlikely they ever got resources for Red and Green since it was just some dumb Japanese RPG that was supposed to launch late 1995 on the ancient Gameboy hardware.

Download BBEdit, it's free and will open a lot of the files with funky extensions and can switch to Shift JIS for the stuff in Japanese. It's also just a great text editor in general. Highly recommend to my fellow macfags. I've pretty much just been opening everything with it and poking around.

Aha found how to get yellow pm_debug to build!
Seems it was some pm_debug code inside BATTLE.DMG that threw off the bank size or whatever, removing/disabling it lets the build succeed & conv.bat won't complain!
Haven't tried with all the debug_vol flags yet though, I'll give that a shot in a sec

You'd be surprised. Games from the MSX have auto line wrapping ffs. Japanese games.

LZ compression as a concept relies on circular buffers and bounds checking, and was used since the NES. Text rendering onscreen typically requires some bounds checking otherwise it would overwrite tilemap/palette data and corrupt the screen in a major irreversible way.

Uncompressing graphics and assets is the number one thing that needs to have some bound check, to stop if x bytes have been written. You can corrupt all sort of things, game variables, the stack which uses part of the RAM which would have disastrous immediate, or not so immediate but untraceable consequences. And so, most of the times i see decompression code that caps at 256 bytes chunks of data or similar limits, regardless of the source, to avoid disaster.

Seems a lot of those are just checks if B is held to disable encounters, but if you remove the debug code from BATTLE.DMG it won't have any effect since that handles the B button check.

t01r0102.dmg swaps in t01r0102.dbg instead of t01r0102.dbg in debug mode, I guess that handles the rocket teleport.

TOWN01.dmg has some check for the flag, not sure what exactly it does though, something to do with the town sign.

PLAY1.dmg does something idk about

DEBUG.dmg has a lot of interesting things, hopefully there's a way to get it working.

Yeah, two unused/unreferenced debug features. monster_maker is the pokemon maker like in the g/s debug. monster_maker2 lets you pick a level then gives you all 151 pokemon in your pc at that level.

Someone needs to hook that code up to the game somehow.

Again, that's literally every operation that involves interpreting and writing data in every game ever. Back when every byte and cycle had to be saved, there was no justifiable reason for pessimistic bounds checking. If you're indexing a table of 151 Pokémon entries, then you write that code with the assumption that your pointer will be between 0 and 150, and make it "safe" via further assumptions that none of the places that will be used to provide the index -- a tile's encounter list, for example -- will have anything beyond that range either.

I don't know why I'm even bothering to explain this. 99% of everything "broken" about every game you've seen a speedrun or glitch exhibition of comes from the fact that there is no bounds checking in these games, ever. The Minus World. RBA in OoT. The list goes on.
