he has plenty of spells and traps that would fit in with the rest of the dark-type moves though. it's not as if most dark-types are evil either, they just use underhanded methods

Light is too fucking restrictive. The whole reason it's Fairy is because Pokemon already has a ton of fairy-based monsters, and because it was made as a counter to Dragon.

When you think of a mythical creature more powerful than dragons, fairies are the first thing that comes to mind.

Fine, then split Fairy into two halves, combine one with Psychic to make Spellcaster and then the other half can be reskinned into Light. 9/10 Fairies in Yu-Gi-Oh are Light-attribute anyways

Excuse-me, what?
I don't advocate for them being turned into mons but literal gods, lovecraftian monsters, anything DC has given shapo to these last 20 years come to mind, among others, before fairies.
If you asked a random person in the street what fairies look like, you'd probably get more thinkerbells than old Irish tales about small and malicious demons.

Even before that, we had Magic Mirror/Bounce, Magic Guard, Magic Coat, Magic Room, the Abra family all being magicians, Will, Delphox, and other Magic-esque Pokemon being mostly Psychic-type.

That's a pendulum monster, so which box you read depends on what you're doing with it. You can either use it as a monster or a pendulum monster (which is sorta-kinda akin to a field spell). The tl;dr on it is:
>if you're using it as a pendulum monster, you can pay 6 spell counters to turn it into a normal monster
>when you use the above effect, you get to destroy cards equal to the number of monsters you have who still have spell counters, then put that many counters on him
>when he's a normal monster, you can stop one of your opponent's spell/trap cards by sending one of your monsters that has spell counters to the hand (then move its counters to this guy)
>he's also immune to being destroyed through anything besides a stronger monster killing him
>you can search for a spell card when he's destroyed
The last two effects don't work if he has no spell counters though, but that's largely just to make sure you're actually using him in a deck of monsters that use spell counters.

This fucking card and old design are so fucking nostalgic, I love it. Similar to seeing the old Sugimori drawings.
On type, why not just pure psychic? If not, I'd say psychic/dark. There is >>43301983 for ghost, but I think that only counts to Yugi's/Pharoah's Dark Magician, the common Dark Magician seems to be more just a powerful spellcaster in dark magic, so dark makes more sense.
