Maybe in the anime, I would agree. However, he did had some screentime in BW as well as plot significance. In addition to mentoring Cheren, he's shown being active against Team Plasma and helping you find the Dark/Light Stone in the Relic Castle. His final contribution was facing N and while he did lose, he hold off enough time for you to reach him. In B2W2, he retired from being a champion, but is still shown as a mentor to children and new trainers.

I fucking love alder. My favorite champion for sure, he actually has a tangible and likable personality, I wish he was the actual champ in BW2 but Iris was cool too. I often see him at the bottom of peoples champion tier list which is undeserved.
Honestly I'd say kukui is underappreciated I actually really liked his personality (Big deal when you gotta hear from it so often) and felt his role as the final boss in sun and moon was amazing, really wish he wasn't replaced by Hau in ultra sun.

Lore wise, legendaries stomps on both of those. The whole point of finding the LIght/Dark stone is so that you could stand a chance against N's legendary. Plus, Alder's a old man, and his ace, a.k.a his strongest pokemon, isn't really his starter(his starter died when he was young).

I honestly fucking hate this, the game could have had a really good message about the strength of a legendary not mattering in the face of bonds with your pokemon, but they undermine it by having Hilbert face N with a cover legendary canonically

I believed the whole point of it was symbolism. Hilbert and N are like the modern day version of the legendary twin heroes, whose feud cause the original Kyurem to split into three and have the two turn against each other.

Around the time X/Y were coming out, I was beginning to get a bit tired of replaying the same pokemom games over and over.

The challenge and enjoyment had gone, it was just a chore to pass the time.

When Volkner talks about him remodelling his gym and the possibility of challenging the Elite Four out of sheer boredom, that solified him as a great character to me.

Alder only lost to the Hero of Truth and Hero of Ideals. The other champions lost to normal trainers, but his team should have been Volcarona, Bouffallant, Braviary, Haxorus, Jellicent and Ferrothorn. Feel free to suggest other teams.
