>>43309797Ho-Oh and Lugia both felt insanely atmospheric. On the one hand, you climb up this creaky old tower probably built over two hundred years ago, with nothing living there but rats. Finding Ho-Oh at the very top, possibly the highest point in Johto, felt almost like a spiritual sort of thing as a kid.
But I also really love the way that you have to go far out of your way, into this vast system of caves, to find Lugia in a secluded chamber at the bottom of a waterfall. It really drove home the idea that these weren't creatures that an ordinary trainer would ever see -- you know, the sort of Pokemon that would exist in legends. You had to be the bravest and most daring sort of person to find them.
I honestly wish that HGSS didn't add those cutscenes before you encountered the box legendary of whichever game you played. It really takes away from the mystique. Although I definitely like the unique music they added; it was admittedly a little disappointing to still hear the regular wild Pokemon theme.
