The main problem I had with Origins was Red being an even more boring character than Ash, traveling alone and only focusing on one of his Pokemon didn't help that much.

They couldn’t really flesh out characters in the OVA. If it were a series, it would be subjectively better than the current anime.

It really wouldn't unless they fix the problem of Red's other Pokemon being jobbers and Charizard bullshitting its way through everything because it's Charizard. Origins had shitty battles too. And why where there HP bars? This isn't a video game.

Nice headcanon. The Red in my head is a better character than Ash. If they only made the anime in my brain instead of Origins. It has nothing to do with Red actually being a shitty self-insert blank slate.
