What Hoenn did very well, that I think was present in Unova too to a lesser extent, is having multiple secret places you could access with surf and explore a little. Nothing too huge but a good sense of discovering something new.

Incorrect, water routes are primarily water and require you to pass over water, like route 9. Wild area has one area you require the bike to cross and it doesn't actually get you anywhere other than to the next retarded random climate
