I once soloed a game like that; but the second time I did that, I put an additional rule I couldn't gain experience from any wild Pokémon unless I'm forced to.

Nah. Even in my first playthrough of Blue when I was seven, I built a team of six pokemon that I trained evenly. I actually remember my first team well. Blastoise, Raticate, Pidgeot, Raichu, Nidoking, Kadabra.

its honestly the most efficient way to play the game in 99% of scenarios, i don't understand how it counts as a challenge. almost any overlevelled pokemon will wreck the game with 4 well selected moves

First time I played Red, I solo'ed up to Sabrina with Charizard and HM saves. Then I reset to play properly as I knew there was no challenge in doing it the other way.

Just finished Galar in 14 hours with only Cinderace. I've done almost every game with just starters + HM slaves but I'd be lying if I said it was fun

I was attempting to with a ratatta/raticate but it was in PokeMMO and I guess when they implemented the "pokemon not listening to you" mechanic they forgot that that was only supposed to activate with traded pokemon, because my boy just stopped listening to me and I gave up.

Unless said Pokemon is an unevolved shitmon, using only one pokemon actually makes the game easier (all exp goes to it).
And btw, soloing the game with an unvolved shitmon is still easier than beating it with 6 unevolved shitmons (for exp reasons)
