What are the traits that make a pokemon design appealing to you? Any specific patterns your find yourself gravitating towards and what are the red flags that cause you to look the other way?

A good starter design is what visually brings out the element aspect.

For example, look at Torterra. It's a grass starter, so it's a tortoise to emphasize its down-to-earth species, and its shell looks like a landscape. It probably has the best design out of all the starters if I'm gonna be honest.

It wasn't my first gen or anything nor is it my favourite but gen 3 really hits a sweet spot for me. All of the pokemon feel like they have designs somewhere between detailed and simple and they really stand out as unique. Something like the fossils, duskull line, shuppet line, mawile, sableye, sharpedo line, camerupt line, the starters, tropius, torkoal, the sumo niggas, the lotad and seedot lines, the aron lines, basically just every hoenn mon honestly are just so fucking good in my eyes, idek why i tried to list them all, it's basically fucking all of them. I think what really drives it home for me tho is that all the pokemon in a single line look legitimately distinct from one another, like they're their own design apart from the rest while still looking like it's related to the rest of it's evolutionary family, which other gens don't pull off as well in my eyes. Like, even the fucking regular animal designs manage to look completely unique and nothing like "Just my mom's" anything. I'm going on about it but I really really REALLY quite like hoenn pokemon, which is odd because gen 5 is my favourite and I like gen 5 mons a lot too, but they don't share much of what I truly love about hoenn pokemon (Even if they're still good in their own way)

I tend to like designs with a kaijuesque appeal(doesnt have to be a upright dinos, just have to convey that feel of cool beast that kicks ass). Some non-gen1 examples of this would be flygon and groudon.
I dislike humanoids or the ones that are just the pokemon version of a real animal... with an element tacked on!

Cant say I'm too happy with the current trends without being called a genwunner but oh well.

Every water pokemon has been shown to be able to spew water endlessly from it's mouth, fuck off with your illusion of any realism in pokemon. many pokemon are designed specifically to be cool battle monsters because that is what they are, and while we're at Cannons are a good offensive trait, so even if it's not realistic it actually is sensible which is more than some pokemon have

My issue with the original 151 is that the type balance is shit. I'm fine with ghost and dragon types being rare, but why is basically every grass type part poison, and basically every bug type part poison or flying, and basically every Ice type part water, and basically every electric type pure electric, and basically every fighting type pure fighting, and basically every flying type part normal? For that fucking matter why is poison type so unbelievably common? Honorable mentions go to rock/ground. They repeat duel types so many times, you'd think with 151 and them supposedly being selective about which pokemon made the cut there would be actual type diversity but there literally is not, at fucking all. These are not a well balanced bunch, they need other gens to introduce actual variety

Pokemon don't need to be super special or anything, it's not the elements in the design, it's how well those elements are used to make a good monster design that matters, and I'm sick of the fucking meme that says otherwise

The bulk of gen 1 pokemon werent designed with types in mind, the concept of typing was a relatively late addition. I agree its not the best distribution for gameplay purposes and could definitely be worked on but when you look it's gonna make sense for wasps and snakes and rafflesias and mushrooms and jellyfish and pitcher plants and pollution etc to be poisonous.

I like generic monsters not based on any animal in particular, stuff like Coalossal, all of the Nidos but especially Nidoking, Haxorus, Necrozma, Naganadel, Kyrurem, things like that.

I don;t mind humanoid designs, I quite like Hitmonchan, Kartana, and Pawniard, but I can't stand furfag designs where it's just a human with an animal head (Incineroar, Toxicroak, Zroroark, etc.)

I rather like some of the cute designs as well, Victini is among my favorite pokemon, so are Sylveon, Absol ,and Wimpod, all of which I consider extremely cute and would want to snuggle.

Gen 3 felt kinda...."off" when coming from Gen 1 and 2.
Now there are quite a lot of Gen 3 designs I love, but when first playing Ruby as a 10 years old kid I kinda felt like it wasnt the same franchise as the two previous games

both blastoise and venusaur were designed before they were chosen to be starters, and thats why they look like pokemon
they could fit in with all the other monsters
but after a while starter pokemon became furries with jobs, and they cant be anything other than starters
like, something like sceptile and feraligatr fit in with grass and water types like tropius, gyarados, exegutor, kindra
but all the starters from gen 6 on stick out like sore thumbs, they donty look like any other pokemon, they dont fit in

Decent well-distributed color pallets along with proportions that make it seem that there was a clear vision by the designer.

The idea of bonding and adventuring with an intelligent/perfect pet has always been what I like the most about Pokémon so I tend to gravitate towards designs I feel would make cool pets or travelling companions, I also tend to like things I can picture existing in the real world, but maybe without the superpowers.

I like pretty much all of the Japanese regions because they feel more like irrelevant backwaters where people actually live through my western eyes, of this I feel West Kanto does that the best, while everything from Unova onward just feels kitschy to me.

Those are bubbles it controls with singing, it uses them to attack and it's a progression from Popplio and Brionne's bubble themes. If the concept of a mermaid-like sea lion controlling bubbles with its singing is too hard for you to understand then there's nothing to discuss, you are just complaining about things you don't get or want to look into.
