Both BW and SM were going for an idiot savant kind of ash. The reason nobody complained about the latter is because he kept his competence from XY while the former was reset hard. I have never watched the anime. But from time to time, I watch s&m clips on youtube, and let me tell you, the animators of that show look like they're having a blast. they do good action too, watched the brock/steelix vs black trial guide and it was fantastic.
