It's only natural that they are envious of the younger generations, in which more competent parents were able to provide for their children's needs and thus give them a happy childhood. They like to delude themselves and say "No, we were more disciplined!", even though, deep down, they know that their unfullfilling past has left them bitter and hateful. The best they could do now is fake their confidence and put on a superiority act to hide their own shame at how angry they are at themselves.
