They should at least update most flying mons to have a less awkward model. Charizard, Dragonite, and Salamence deserve standing models. Birds like Xatu and Swellow who just hover should be updated too.

They don't need to be updated. They were already too good for the 3DS, which is why the framerate dropped to unplayable levels when more than 2 were on onscreen at the time.

Also, posing and textures having nothing to do with models.

Why does a series with stricter deadlines because it's a bigger franchise, with more models to work on not get the same treatment as a smaller series with less models to work on?

They already have non-flying poses that are used in Amie/Refresh/Camp. You'd know this if you actually played the fucking game instead of just playing Showdown. How they're posed is completely separate from the model.

This isn't that fair a comparison, Animal Crossing's designs are all very template with small defining differences beyond the textures whereas Pokemon are for the most part entirely different designs that need to be made from scratch

Yeah, what bothers me with Swellow is that it hovers, it should look like it's actually flying. Its best sprite has it in the air and if they could capture how great it looks while flying in 3D, instead of the shit hovering we have now that would be great

There are as many animal crossing characters are there are Pokemon in a single game now. There is literally no excuse.

Once again model=\=texture. The answer OP is that gamefreak is lazy and wanted to cut corners at every chance they could. They have over half of the pokemon cut for sword and shield, and they could have cut even more if they actually made improvements. But they didnt and so we are left with significantly less new Pokémon models, but be super glad they did make a new table model for your moms house. That is where their effort went.

The bare minimum component for a 3D model to be identified as such is a mesh. This does not discount the surrounding or integrated components from being identified as principle aspects of a given model's identity. An untextured Bulbasaur for example would likely be called an unfinished model in practical terms. Changing parts of any individual facet can be said to result in a different model or a variation depending on how it's identified in practice and potentially the extent of said changes.

I've never played an Animal Crossing game before. It seemed to me that they put lots of care into the game with all the little details they added. I didn't know there was cut content, but at least they are adding the cut stuff back for free instead of in a DLC pass or something.

Having every Pokemon in SwSh might be feasible, but what about the future? And the long they waited to do it, the more controversial it would be. They already considered doing it for Sun/Moon but chickened out at the last minute (as evidenced by Gen 7 not having a National Dex and Pokemon not in the regional dex not having an entries at all). So they decided to just go ahead and do it now.

Color information can be baked into the vertices through Vertex Maps as opposed to exclusively being applied externally as you suggest.

Modern engines also aren't universally constrained in such a way that palettes must be stored externally or can't be pulled from the image/sprite itself.

They literally aren't the same mesh, you retard. The black one is the one from SS. The grey one is the one from SM. The third image is both overlayed to show the difference. The SM mesh has a poly count of 6216 while the SS one has a poly count of 6056.

Are you willfully retarded? The texture is the only thing that was updated. The mesh is the same, the animation is the same. It takes comparably less time to update the texture, especially if you have a base to work off of. Considering that, it could have taken 30 minutes to make a new texture. No real work was done into updating these models, and it's inexcusable considering what SWSH brought to the table (Hint: nothing).

Static 2D sprites don't work anymore know what we know what's actually happening in battles, and lots of modern Pokemon are designed with 3D in mind have gimmicks that don't work if they're just a sprite.

But also sheer laziness and minor changes that GameFreak doesn't care to draw your attention to like how they changed Glameow's head shape from Gen 6 to Gen 7. I wish they were cool enough to list the changes instead of making their fanbase search for them.

They fixed Glameow between Gen 6 and 7. I don't think there's been any other major model updates. The rest is just animation stuff like Mega Heracross using its arm cannon animation for Pin Missile.

You're never going to get that because is a franchise that relies on a new game coming out every year.

Without a new game, they can't sell new toys or cards. That's just how Pokemon as a franchise operates. The only value the games have is to introduce new characters for the rest of the franchise to use.

Practically speaking, it's the exact same model with some ridiculously minor alterations made to the geometry. Based on the poly count numbers they're literally 97% the same. It'd be like changing the tires of a car and claiming it's a new model of car. Or using photoshop to alter the tint of a piece of art and then claiming it's a new work.

The only really difference and the textures, shadowing and mesh, where the model is basically exactly the same.

Even most (like 90%) of the animations are exactly the same as S/M aside from maybe a few of the newer moves.

That’s another thing - we lost a lot of moves from Gen 7 to 8 as well. More than we ever have in a single gen.
