Was a fan at the time because we were coming off BW2 and I happily used the revised breeding/raising mechanics to prep for post game in future version. Now that it only exists as a single player campaign, it's pretty dull.

Pretty bare-bones.
It mainly suffered for the amount of time spent making 3d models.
This game really could have benefited with an enhanced version.

they were just boring. it's like watching a tv show that's gone on too long: yeah all the actors and sets are there and the plots are similar enough but it's impossible to give a shit.
i could not believe how much shit was rehashed from gen 1. not just viridian forest and the starters, but snorlax on the bridge, the evil team invading a poké ball factory? how fucking lazy can you get? and the plot was utterly threadbare besides that. it doesn't start until the eighth fucking gym and it's pretty stupid even then.
the gyms were insultingly easy
the routes were simple and didn't reward exploration. really fucking ridiculous considering this game has mega stones, the best possible prize an item box could ever have. too bad they're all fucking post game so you're just bored until the credits roll.
no choices
megas are a neat idea with shit execution. ignoring how they were handled in ORAS and subsequent games: it's fucked that they were basically all for gen one pokémon, with no kalos pokémon having megas. no mega greninja? no mega xerneas? but there's two fucking mega charizards and two mega mewtwos. what the fuck. zygarde even has a dumb transformation gimmick but it isn't a mega. they did not give a fuck.
overall i hate the shit out of them and i think the shit combo of XY and ORAS were so bad that game freak is still struggling to get the series "back on track" because that proved they were incapable of making normal pokémon games.
as for the good: basically everything you could do with the touch screen was neat. i liked being able to play games with my pokémon, especially super training for EVs and various items. amie was ok. the room decorating thing was cute. online was good.
buying costumes was pretty cool
lumiose is a neat idea and it looks really good from certain angles. i wish every pokémon game had a city of that type.
uh fairy was... an improvement i think. type balance is like 2% better now. still bad, but better.

Utterly boring. Relied too much on old stuff, none of the new stuff stood out, and half of it was a bunch of unrelated gimmicks haphazardly stapled together. Also they wasted every legendary and mythical they had.

I think that this was the most accurate assessment. There were some great things to come out of this game, but its failures were an omen to what was about to come.

environments were really corridory and the settings were obvious; also, the art was pretty bland -- I don't know why they went with just a normal-looking graphics language and didn't render a style consistent with the character design. Same problem I have with the anime

The Single player experience isn’t as good as it could’ve been but the online experience is still the best in the entire series and it baffles me that it got worse after ORAS.

In the battles, maybe. But overworld music is some of the strongest in the entire series.

Diantha is easily the most udnerdeveloped champion in the series.
The Exp Share and step back to fixed EXP gain formula also meant that everyone is overleveled when facing her, which, combined with her rather weak team, meant everyone breezed through her without anything memorable happening.

It feels like they tried going the Steven route by giving her both fossils...but it just doesn't work thematically, while the fossils are covered in weaknesses..
