If team preview was removed how it will impact competitive Pokemon?

I imagine Pokemon like volcarona and zoroark being too good

Gen 4 still functioned because you could guess someone's team composition if not their specific mons from the first few they send out. Now that there are this many Pokemon and playstyles, I don't see how anyone could have fun without team preview and basically being blindsided every game.

And Team Preview was never not a thing. Stadium, Stadium 2, Colosseum, and Gale of Darkenss all had it.

The game would be unplayable without team preview. Since official battles are 3v3 (singles) and 4v4 (doubles), the point is to allow both players to make an educated guess about which Pokemon their opponents are going to pick and plan accordingly.

Unplayable, or just have to be more rounded with each Pokémon? I had plenty of battles back in the day before preview was a thing and it was fine. Hell, I play Magic and the Pokémon TCG very regularly and never know what is in the deck across from me beforehand. Tournaments work out fine.

I used to play all the time in gen 4, basically it made stuff imo more fun but a little less consistent.

With no team preview a lot more stuff was viable though, you could genuinely surprise your opponent with gimmicks or unexpected stuff and it could consistently work. At the same time though it made lots of stuff like trapping abilities awful to deal with, so yeah.

Hyper offense would also probably come to the forefront in a big way. The sheer amount of pokemon available in the game is just so large now that its too difficult to have an answer for everything, and defensive teams would be seriously gimped by the necessity of playing around the plethora of potential threats they are up against, even if the opponent doesn't actually have them.

Sounds like the meta would shift to being anti steel really quick, then anti whatever was carrying heatwave. Sort of like how people now can see what you take and then still don’t have an answer. I think it would be different, and take away a layer of sophistication...but to act as if it destroys the entire game is absurd. It sounds like going through the battle tower and not seeing what is coming out next.

It can only improve it. I will literally never understand why team preview is even a thing, why would anyone openly share their team construction? It not only limits a lot of strategy but it immediately allows your opponent to start thinking of counters. There's no real surprise, and I'm certain it's why the meta is so highly roper around the same handful of Pokemon. If there was no team preview, it still would be a tight meta, but there would be more wiggle room for curve balls and surprise okays which can only make it funner. Don't understand why there isn't simply a side tier that removed team preview. Moronic.

Because it's a necessity in a game with such a huge number of "characters". There's a reason why the "Stadium" games all have it. Without it, it's impossible to plan or strategize.

The only format you could argue it's detrimental to is 6v6 singles. But that's not an official format. The official format is 3v3 singles and 4v4 doubles, so only 3 or 4 of the 6 Pokemon shown in the preview will actually get used.

But I can just as well be said that in 3s or dubs you can create a team of six balanced between pairs which cover a lot of tactical ground. And guess what, just like there's RNG programmed directly in the game, I see nothing wrong with their being some in play simply by choosing what mons you're going to send out. Like I said, any intelligent player will still stick to teams balanced between counters and strategies, and the meta will still be tight, but there will be more wiggle room for different mons and surprise tactics to see play. I think because there's such a huge number pokemon is exactly why it should be blind.

Magic the gathering has over 20,000 unique cards and seems to function fine without showing me an opponents deck. Pokémon has substantially less characters. Albeit the moves are a variable that changes stuff, but multiple cards can function in drastically different ways dependent upon color of mana available and other cards in the deck.

And then you start thinking of what Pokemon your opponent has to counter your strategy and counter that, and as a result both you and your opponent get to make an intelligent decision on what you're going to play against each other instead of somebody automatically losing because "oh I wasn't prepared for prankster Meowstic skill swapping to Shiinotic guess I lose".

Instead in Pokémon you get to still actually battle and potentially win, even if early game is dominated by the opponent.
