I don't know, because of how crazy ugly the entire dex is, I kind of consider gen 3 the last cohesive gen. Gen 5 felt like a return to form. Yes, more stylized, but at least NOT ugly.

You don't do that with a fucking starter type. It just means that if you don't pick that type you're losing out if you want to use something from it. There's only two Ice type lines in DP as well (despite being the cold region) yet people complain about that way less since it's not a starter type.

Your only Dragon options are Garchomp and your cover legendary too, Oh and for Electric you get Luxray, Raichu, and Pachirisu, and Pachirisu is pretty mediocre, so you're left with Luxray if you don't want to use old Pokemon. It's not like this isn't an issue for Fire only.

Literally all anyone complains about gen 5 is that they're more cartoony. So yeah, stylized. Simplified, which was very welcome after the over designed pokemon of gen 4 and droopy chimp faced legendaries.

In every single gen, Fire is in the top 5 rarest types while Grass and Water are in the top 5 most common types.
In fact, here's how """common""" fire types are in fucking gen1
- Charmander
- Vulpix OR Growlithe (Version exclusives)
- Flareon (You only get one and no Eevee, so you're fucked if you evolve Eevee into anything else)
- Ponyta, near the end of the game
- Magmar, near the end of the game, exclusive to Blue
- Moltres, literally at the end of the game just before the E4

Gen 5 was cohesive within itself and had similar colors among all Pokemon (which is something I appreciate Gen 7 for doing as well, even if I'm not too fond of them individually). Gen 5 also felt more organic in a way, like birdmons being actual birds and not having weird haircuts while still being interesting, same with its bugs and dragons, etc. It managed to do the "literally my mom's" but still gave it a spin to make it interesting, like how Leavanny is a literal copy of a leaf bug and yet it has its charm and uniqueness. Simple stuff like that. Gen 4 gave half of its dex a beer belly, limbs weirdly sticking out in odd ways, lots of spikes and unappealing shapes and colors plastered all over. It's the very definition of over-designed and they're a sore to look at. Seeing them all together specially is a mess. Funnily enough, it's the closest dex to Gen 8's when it comes to design philosophies, they share many similarities.

it's not like you need one. the game is still piss easy and you can do the same job with other types
they should go all in and make a game with no fire/ water/ grass until post game. there must be enough of the other types now that we're up to a thousand pokémon

Sinnoh is among my favorite games but this is facts. The type balance was super mega shit and the distribution of pokemon was also quite bad. Compare that to something like hoenn or, yes, even unova, which had some type imbalance (Hoenn's water types come to mind) but the pokemon were well rounded in terms of design and were well distributed. Also I feel sinnoh falls short with it's new designs, some are really fucking good, but they wear really thin after a while. In dp in particular less than 100 new designs are available during the main game and it shows with a lot of areas having basically no actual sinnoh pokemon and there being A LOT of repeat encounter tables. Say what you want about unova's designs, I can see why they're the center of a lot of conflict but they did a really good job making a well balanced dex out of only 150 or so mons, it actually feels complete without being huge and each area has new mons to discover so it never feels too samey.

And that's still way better than DP, and every type in gen 1 besides Dragon and Ghost had at least three or four options. Dragon and Ghost being super rare in gens 1 and 2 was a relic that didn't need repeating with a starter type. Even if you ignore Kanto, there's Hoenn where you get Camerupt AND Torkoal, not to mention lol Magcargo.

No it's not "way better than DP."
By the time you reach the fourth Fire Pokemon, the only things left to do in the game are:
- Fire Gym
- Ground Gym
- A cave full of Rock pokemon
- E4
- Cerulean cave
The fuck are you going to use Rapidash for? Half the remaining content resists it.

Meanwhile in DP you finish the E4 and unlock new Fire types alongside a huge post-game that makes it worth using them.

I have mixed feelings about Sinnoh's legendaries. Regigigas, Giratina, Shaymin (land form), and Darkrai are all cool. The problem is pretty much all the others are some of the worst designs I've seen in the series.

But those were incredibly niche, and still were for several years after. Furries back then were a huge phenomenon which even got documentaries of all things, it was all happening at around the same time so assuming the most known anthro Pokemon was made with such intent isn't too far-fetched. The thing about Gen IV was that the first releases DP felt really weak. For what miniscule changes that were made to platinum, I felt like I enjoyed it much more. Another thing we're how many legendaries it introduced. It definitely felt overblown, and many were really lame like the lake spirits which just seemed like shittier celebis. Gen 3 had some issues too though, as Latinas/Latios felt like inferior versions of Lugia. It's like how they introduced Pulsle and Minun which were incredibly unnecessary designs. The Regi were interesting but kind of shitty in terms of use. IMO it exaggerated the problems from Gen 3.

Flying legendaries with aerodynamic features, similar head shapes and are mostly white. The only real difference are some of the decals and the limbs. Latias/Latios are shitty rehashes - and even if you argue that they aren't rehashes, they're at least made redundant even if they did come from a proto Blaiziken design. A perfect example of too many legendaries.

Dude, this isn't Smogon. Ingame you don't really need a Fire type because Grass and Bug pokemon are jobbers and Steel can be handled with anything else. You can replace the function of a Fire type with a Flying or Fighting type.

no. but real talk, Sinnoh is more visually consistent than Unova but it is guilty of almost all of the shit Unova gets blamed for, with shitty overdesigned starters and legendaries out the ass and some very divisive designs littered throughout the dex. some of these trends started even earlier with RSE, it was truly when the franchise died.

I'll never understand why people have a problem with this, it actually makes so much sense. It was the first non-japanese region, in a complete different continent, so they wanted to show how Pokemon had evolved to look there, that's why making the same type of animals but different was so smart. Having direct allusions to previous Pokemon like that helped to drive the point home. It was like Alola forms before we had Alola forms. Like African elephants vs Indian elephants, same animal, yet different due to it's habitat.
