Gen 3 introduced plenty and established a new direction for the series. Abilities, a whole new template for Pokemon stories, a then-unique increased emphasis on new Pokemon over having the old Pokemon with new ones sprinkled in, secret bases, etc.
Gen 6 didn't introduce anything impactful to a normal playthrough other than Mega Evolution. Fairy type could be easily ignored.

I miss PSS, the only thing I miss from Gen 6 is how they handled connectivity and allowed us to type UU only, then spend the entire day getting only UU battles while relaxing around doing random shit.

They are bad because of the wasted potential. A world that was begging to be fleshed out, characters that were one note, and an unfinished story. These and SwSh are the most obviously rushed games in the franchise, where they prioritized the new engine and models over the detail. The detail is what fags like us obsess over so when it's missing it's easy for us to tell and makes it so much worse.

On a technical level, it was good: we got a bunch of new mechanics that helped improve things (PSS, Wonder Trading, streamlined breeding, customization, 3D graphics.) It had a lot of great Pokemon, in my opinion. It just fails in terms of gameplay and writing. Battles are too easy, there's no sidegame features or postgame, the pacing is awful, and everything to do with the story and characters (sans Emma) was terrible.

So it's half-great, half-awful. It evens out to a solid "meh." Just stopgaps until the 20th anniversary Gen.

They really weren't. Had they been harder, better paced, had less Kanto pandering, and have included a tad more exploration (especially in the post game) they would've been pretty good and set the groundwork for a fantastic Z version.

You answered your own question, anon. Gen 3 was just Gen 1 again but with shit mon designs, Gen 2 actually served to further develop the franchise and provide a different and more substantial experience, which was entirely reverted by Gen 3

Pacing was great up until the second gym then it was just a race to beat team flare and then the league. postgame was non existent, all you had was zygarde, kanto bird and looker story. The rematches in the chateau would have been fun if all the gym leaders and e4 had a full team of 6 and were level 80 without the black writ. I can appreciate how it tried to use 3d, kalos was a pretty region but most of the time it looked like an ugly pixelated mess. I just couldn't find much reason to keep playing this after beating the league and getting grand duke. I sunk more time into ORAS despite it's flaws cause it was comfy and secret bases were great.
