Gen V was pretty good, play through Black/White & Black/White 2 for a similar feel to Gen 1 & 2's sequel format (it's one region but you get new areas with BW2. Gen 6 isn't terrible, just feels incomplete and rushed because GF abandoned development in favor of cranking out Gen 7 for the 20th anniversary. Gen 7 changes the formula of pokemon games buy removing gyms, reducing the evil team to a joke, and changing the over-world to a cramped 3D style that results in poor route design and soulless character models (the player character has one expression and it's awful). Gen 8 is better but very lacking in content and has a lot of extra paywalls in order to achieve the same experience as older games. I do not recommend gen 8.
