Monotype teams are fine in concept, but awful in practice. What pisses me off about how monotype teams are handled in the official games is that they're just that - monotype. There's no additional spice.
You don't ever see any additional themes thrown into the collection, like a japanese-themed grass type team with mons like shiftry and lurantis, or a combat-themed steel team with mons like perrserker and aegislash. All of the theming is exclusively done through the gym leader themselves, and MAYBE if you're lucky their ace will fit the theme the gym leader sets.
In addition, seeing creative strategies, like a dark type team who has a bunch of relatively weak lackey mons (like scraggy or sableye) made to support a strong leader (like honchkrow or alolan raticate). The closest you'll get to that is Elesa, who has the strategy of "spam volt switch to force the player to actually think about what will happen next rather than just spamming the super effective move." I really hoped that her team was a sign of things to come, but evidently not.
If they decided to do literally ANYTHING with the idea of monotype teams beyond just spamming mons that are the same type, I'd be all for it. As is, though, I'm just left wanting something else.
