i always imagined it kind of similar to those foil balloons of the tough rubber ones on strong elastic you get from fairs. tougher than a regular balloon, kind of firm and crisp from being inflated, with a little bit of give if you poked it. alternately maybe a thin hard shell, like dried leather or melted plastic.
