Conceptual link remoraid - octillery. The only concrete design links are the lines that form the eyes, and the nodes which are present on beta remoraid. Also the overall vibe is consistent. I love it

Why are whirl and wrath referred to as tadpoles? They have arms and legs and no tail.

This. They were redesigned, presumably so parents that are anti-violence-in-video-games wouldn’t have a fit, and the design inspiration, and thus their link, was lost. Now they just look like a cartoon remora and a cartoon octopus.

Daily reminder than Poliwrath was accidentally put into the game instead of a frog mon and was just an alternate angry Polywhirl sprite. They later fixed their mistake to some degree.
