For me personally I prefer platinum in terms of gen 4 games but why do so many like HGSS so much

Is it really just because of kanto, rematching gymleaders, and the battle frontier?

Every time I try to play them again it just is a bad experience due to the Pokémon selection and level curve
Someone made a leveling guide which may makes things better but overall the region feels bland and lacks the fun exploration of other ones

You find jhoto bland? to me the region does a great job giving off that japanese atmosphere with it's osts and cities.

I play Pokémon games for the atmosphere and adventure rather than teambuilding and grinding and HGSS has never been topped for that. Johto feels like an average yet very scenic and calm place where people actually live, and little things like followers make raising my team more personal and less of a boring chore. I don't give much of a shit about the distribution since I can still find things I want to use and if I can't it's trivial to inject them.

I like Gen 2 over all other Pokemon games but even I'm aware of the horrible level curve, Pokemon selection and stupid trivial shit like the hoops you jump through for evolution stones.

Late gen 4 is the best Pokémon has ever been. I love Platinum. It’s easily right behind GS and HGSS. However, I replayed Gold or Silver at least once or twice a year since launch year to that point and really wanted a remade Gold or Silver. The Pokeathalon is still the best side quest, and it’s not even close. Contests suck and Super Contests super suck. The sprites and art direction are second only to Crystal in my preference. People shit on the Safari Zone for the waiting thing, but it really adds quite a few new options to play with. Also, the waiting thing isn’t too bad, most of the egregious waits were for Pokémon I already caught in RS and Platinum and could just transfer over. I loved how you could replay very similar music to the originals, even if it’s not 100% perfect and the remixed stuff is decent and not total garbage like the Gen 1 remakes. In addition the expanded dungeons in both regions adds a nice extra layer of exploration. Sure, Johto doesn’t have the massive exploration with all of the detailed secrets of Hoenn or Sinnoh but Johto and Kanto combined is a little bigger than the single region games and there’s still plenty of secrets. I guess the minor knock against HGSS is that the level curve design here doesn’t account for the secret stat boosts of the original so there’s more grinding here. However, grinding’s a problem for me in Platinum, too. In Plat I usually grind for 3-4 hours just before the Elite 4 and in Johto I usually grind for 3-4 hours before the second Elite 4 rematch with another few hours before Red.

G/S meant a lot to me as games and HG/SS improved them in a lot of ways. The level curve is pretty shit and wasn't fixed, but it's a game I enjoy despite that. Platinum is one of the only games I haven't played so I don't know how much it improves from D/P.

I do think Platinum set a standard that hasn't been touched by the other games. It's only major issue is within the saving and slow engine, but it's everything that a pokemon game should be.

Not that anon but Platinum has pretty much the best level curve in all of pokemon, and some of the best pacing ever. The trainers on routes are often equal level to you, the level curve rises as soon as you start to rise ahead of it yourself, so you are never facing easy trainers. Some trainers like ace trainers use legitimately good AI and their mons don't just have the default movesets, I don't think any of the trainers on victory road had their default movesets. Seriously that 6v6 double battle against ace trainers right before veilstone where Roselia set up double toxic spikes had me sweating nervously. In my most recent playthrough I noticed the pacing too, from the beginning to the first gym is like 2-3 hours and after that all the gyms are consistently 4-5 hours apart, you're never fighting them one after another, there's always plenty of breathing room for laid back uninterupted exploration after a climactic main battle or story event. Platinum and sinnoh has some major flaws that hold the game back for me personally but I've realized it's legitimately the best at feeling like a grand long adventure, it's like 45-50 hours before you've done everything (Not including battle frontier) it's a really fully immersive adventure.
The rest of the games shine where platinum fails but platinum is easily the best in the areas it really shines, it's clear that a lot of effort went into the difficulty curve in particular

the only thing where hgss is inferior to theier originals is that the first legendary is not optional anymore so catching the boxlegendary doesnt feel like an adventure anymore it is mandatory which takes away the sense of adventure and portrais you as a hero instead of a 10 year old kid

For me playing gen 1 and 2 games are difficult because I just don’t really like any of the Pokémon from the regions so I don’t really care about playing. There’s no Pokémon i make a goal to catch during the run so there’s little fun for me. That and I can’t stand fighting level 15 wild Pokémon when the trainers have Pokémon in the mid to high 30’s.

I didn't even realize until a little while ago that going back to dark cave after you get strength let's you battle few more trainers and get access to some items. I also found out that even tho upper dark cave isn't explorable until after blackthorn, you can still access a tiny part of it that let's you battle pokemon, meaning wobbuffet is not only available much earlier than I thought, but it's also a great grinding spot letting fight appropriately leveled mons in the mid 20s at a point where most people complain you can only battle pokemon in the teens. Seriously it's fucking shit like this, little secrets that most players don't even bother finding that makes me love these games so much, I'm still learning new shit I didn't even think to do. it's small but HGSs has some of the most involved exploration in the series, almost all the dungeons are either completely skippable or 90% of them is optional and the actual good stuff that would make the play through easier like good grinding spots or evolution stones are generally really rare so getting rewards feels rewarding

I guess it must not have occurred to the developers that some Pokémon players don't like seeing Pokémon in a Pokémon game. This will probably be doable if it ever returns though, Legpiss let you turn them off and even select arbitrary team members and not just your ace.

HGSS are beautiful games that gave Johto more of its own personality than gold and silver (crystal did more) and was effectively a feature-rich DS game that had following pokemon and the pokewalker, making your experience more personal. I agree that Platinum is a better game overall, but that's more because HGSS are just remakes and the inclusion of kanto killed the level curve and pokemon distribution.

Level curve and selection was never a problem for me. I enjoyed the gym leader rematches a lot, gave me a different reason to be up at different days and play, made grinding fun and varied. Taking pictures with them was cool too. I was particularly proud of myself when I got the gold room in the Pokeathlon, I think it’s the bed side content ever introduced. The frontier was fun in platinum and hgss, never got all the emblems though but I enjoyed the runs through them. Over all yeah, I’d say what made those games fun was rematching strong trainers daily cause it made the region feel alive and had something worth doing every day.
