Pokemon has always had gimmicks, but I think Gen V was the last one to not use a gimmick as a gameplay focus. I'm not chalking it up to the fact that it's the final sprite based game like that has anything to do with it. But even though Gen VI has some interesting ideas, it leaned really hard on Mega Evolution and they dropped it without ever exploring the idea to its fullest. Gen VII and VIII have many issues, but they followed this same trend and we know neither Z moves or Gigantamaxing aren't coming back either.
