I have to admit they did a better job with rivals than XY, but they're all so bland as characters and two of them basically have the same fate.

I see Hau as less pitiable than the Gen 6 rival and Hop because he at least has a second calling in life (eating malasadas). The XY rival and Hop are so obsessed with being a great Pokemon trainer and nothing else it makes you feel awful when you keep beating them.

Game underutilized Marnie and Bede. Manga could give them more development, but the manga has very mediocre art. Meanwhile the anime is just Ash and Goh going wherever and isn't even exclusively a Galar season.

This actually makes sense when you consider how religiously Hop studied his brother's moves. He was always observing Pokemon. This was more obvious in his Twilight Wings episode though.

I wonder what gen 9's rivals will look like. I was surprised we got a rival like Bede, since GameFreak has long been reluctant to have an unfriendly rival for a long time now.

Teaming up with a reluctant rival to investigate the new evil team would be pretty fun.

And I hope that the game goes back to the old formula for how the plot is spread out, since SwSh locking you out of most of it until the end of the main story didn't really sit well with me.

I played Sword and thought Bea was the most generic character ever, but her episode of Twilight Wings really made me like her character.

I hope they do more episodes for Twilight Wings, since there's so much in Galar to explore that the game didn't bother to do anything with. Also, I'm annoyed that Marnie's only appearance in Twlight Wings is likely going to stay as her cameo in the background while Nessa and Sonia were talking at the cafe.

Giving each gym leader a an "arc" in the game would be a pretty cool concept. Maybe have the evil team cause trouble in each city, so then the MC teams up with them and learns more about them as they stop the evil team members in their respective cities.

My dream is a very developed evil team with "generals". That way each city would also have a unique villain for you and the gym leader to take down before you fought your gym battles.

Well, the gym leaders (except Piers) said to call on them if you ever need their help. I'm hoping this means you can call them for some of the DLC's content, otherwise those lines from the gym leaders in the post-game make no sense.

Marnie is only really important for two scenes, when she helps you sneak into Spikemuth and when she helps cheer you on when you're tracking down the guy from Macro Cosmos.

Other than that she's a very minor character that just happens to end up as a gym leader. She also felt very tsundere town the MC, regardless of whether you played as male or female.

Gary was spoiled because his uncle was famous and because Gary himself was talented and popular with girls.

Bede was just some orphan that Rose saw some promise in, which isn't really a unique thing considering what Rose said to that boy in the hospital in the first episode of Twilight Wings.

Marnie's arc kind of sucked. She wanted to be champion, but failed at that, so she decided to do what she didn't want to do and become gym leader. It would've felt much more natural if she would've decided that being the gym leader gave just about as much attention to Spikemuth as being the champion would've. Because as things stand it feels like she just settled for second choice.
