Why? I don't disagree but I'm curious as to why, I've always felt that pokemon distribution and even the chosen pokemon for the games main story were quite shitty in sinnoh, even if I like platinum over all, but I'm not 100% sure why.

To be fair, all of the new evolutions of old mons should've been available in the main game to begin with.
Keep in mind that gen 4 added 107 new Pokemon, and they made you wait until the postgame to use 18 of them.
That's nearly 17% of the new mons not available until you beat the E4. One of the biggest blunders in Pokemon history.

What is it about the DP dex that makes it so bad? 150 mons is patently not enough for a full game but the RB and BW dexes had the same number and their distribution and variety wasn't nearly as bad as Sinnoh's...

RB's distribution is pretty bad too, but there's a lot of useful giftmons at least and a pretty open midgame so that some of the later stuff isn't that late if you know where to go. BW generally just spreads its mons out very well after the first gym.

DP's issue is that not only are there a lot of samey old mons people tend not to want to use (oh look, Geodude and Zubat yet again - at least RB was the first and BW is all new additions) but a lot of the new stuff is really hard to get. Not in a fun way though, but RNG reliant like the honey trees or the Great Marsh. Such as if you want to use Cherrim, you just have to wait for a honey tree to spawn the Pokemon to begin with, then hope it's what you want.

Combine that with some really lacking options for types (not just Fire, Electric and Ice barely have anything, Dragon too, Dark if you're playing Pearl since Honchkrow and Skuntank are Diamond exclusive) and it's not surprising everyone uses the same things.

I went through the whole dex and Jesus Christ you're right. There are 32 water types available across 16 lines. Seven of which are mono-water. Then there are 3 water/flying and 3 water/ground. And that doesn't even include Manaphy and Palkia. In a dex of 151. Apparently GF realised they fucked up for once because the only water mon to be added in Platinum was Vaporeon by virtue of being an eeveelution.
Add in the 23 normal types and that's a full third of your dex slots.

Ice has 2 lines at the tail end.
Electric has 2 lines plus Pachirisu (lol).
I hoped you picked Pearl coz there are only 4 ghost lines. But one of them is Spiritomb :^)
And if you have Pearl you lose out on 2 of the 5 Dark types, leaving you Spritomb (lol), Weavile (LOL) and Drapion.
I've been a sinnohfetus since forever but holy shit this is bad.

how good it this? I’m in the middle of Platinum now, and just worked my way past Pastoria City and the mansion and am thinking of boxing Torterra for Tangrowth. I like fast pokemon in general, as my strategy has always been ‘hit first, and hit hard’. So I might just ditch em both and get me a leafeon...
But then I’d have to find a replacement for the Vaporeon that I’m currently using because of autistic self-imposed ‘one eeveelution’ rules...

I’ll be honest guys. I made this thread entirely because I was upset at the fact that Gliscor can’t learn fly, so if you want to use him you need to have another flying Pokémon on your team. Thus giving you another ice weakness. But here’s the thing, I wouldn’t have been as mad if my options weren’t limited to Staraptor, Togekiss, or fucking Drifblim.

who cares if it isn’t good. I typically only use 2-4 of my pokemon in tough fights, leaving at LEAST one slot that be you typical trash-mon. A lot of people use this for an HM slave. I distribute HMs evenly amongst the team and adopt a ‘mascot’ pokemon.
Plop my boy Pachirisu in that slot, develop it for super contests, and get free revives, great balls, etc, with pick-up.

As much as I hate swsh, its team building is pretty high up there due to raids. The only thing stopping you from catching what you want is the level caps, but since there's no story to get in the way, you just run through a gym to get the next cap out of the way.

I had a perfectly balanced team in Diamond pretty early on. Drifblim, Lopunny, Floatzel, Skuntank, Rapidash, Torterra. Can also chose Roserade, Starraptor, Gastrodon, Drapion, Toxicroak, Bronzong, Garchmop (in Platinum)

Pretty good options, Skuntank even learns flamethrower. There's also a ton of cross-gens to pick from, Plat is one of the best

Gliscor is one of my all-time favorites but the fact that it can't learn fly despite being a flying type really hurts my ability to use it for in-game playthroughs. I get that it glides and doesn't technically fly but the dex entries say it can stay aloft forever, I don't see the issue.

In Gen 1's defense, there was only one line of each type + they were still figuring out how to design the game. By Gen 4, they should've had more than two fucking Fire-Type lines in the main story

Platinum saves Gen 4 but dear God DP was just fucking awful.

Now people start to understand why I criticize them so harshly and why I consider HGSS mediocre when they could have fixed so many issues after DP, instead Snubbull went to 1% encounter rate the level curve wasn't addressed and most of the Dex additions(safari) are at an almost arbitrary point in time after you beat Chuck and cure Amphy.

I dread DP remakes, we need platinum not shitty ports of the worst games.

The previous post specifically says Diamond though, I agree plat is better I never had an issue with diamond and pearl like others do. The worst part of Sinnoh remakes will be a lack of GTS, underground, GBA transfers, and the other stuff that made gen 4 really cool replaced with GF's vision for gen 7-8

Nah, that's just nostalgia talking, been replaying it during quarantine and nostalgia doest hold up, it's kinda sad how a mono fire, mono water and mono grass runs are completely fucked over due to distribution.
Monograss was the most fun one despite camping at the pokeathlon for leaf stones.
HG is just not as good as we remember.

Yeah, and I made it through the game just fine. My view of HMs is that you need to make concessions and build a team suited for to traverse the environment to get around the OW and be strong at the same time, but if you want to have a dedicated slave then more power to you.
