I don't have a problem with meme faces except that they just come out of nowhere and fall flat. They're just not funny and the timing is awful. I saw the dub which might explain why it's terrible but I play pokemon in the background while I play the games. I'll watch the sub and and it might be better but my guess is that it will still be overdone.

Meme faces are not bad but in SM they are poorly done.

Slapstick is not random. It usually has a build-up or a set-up. When it is unexpected you still need to get the right timing and it needs the proper space to work. The slapstick in Sun and Moon doesn't match and it's not appropriate.
