Pawns and Bishops are obvious
Mew and Mewtwo for king and queen
Stakataka for rook
Gardevoir for knight because lolsirnight and it can float which is kinda like jumping

thus a variegated core of steel/bug with a psychic vibe. It makes sense for vespiquen to control combee pawns and for those pawns to become vespiquen (promotion rule of chess). maybe the other pieces could evolve over the course of the game too by taking pieces, while Empoleon grows up slowly. dunno
