Battle Frontiers offer gameplay that you can't get from online PvP, for example the Battle Factory allows you to use rental pokémon, and there's some strategy because you get told some hints about the next trainer's types and you can switch your pokémon with the trainer you just fought.
All of that is something that cannot be reproduced from simply battling someone online.
Why can't the Battle Frontier co-exist with online battles anyway
