It died with SM. Instead of improving on the good parts of XY and taking the next step, they doubled down on everything that made it bad and regressed and have stuck with that formula ever since.

XY gets a free pass because it was their first real 3D game, while I agree that there's some good stuff from it that was left out in SM, I'd say that SM is actually pretty fine compared to the absolute shitshow that's been SwSh so far. There was so much GF could've done now that they had console power, but they basically wasted all their potential.
Any hope Pokemon had of getting back to their former glory died with SwSh.

Pokemon doesn't need to go back to its "former glory". The issue is that the jump to 3D didn't evolve the games in anyway. They're still 2D games in terms of design. They're still using the same abstractions that worked for a 2D game, but do not work at all in 3D.

In 3D, you can't just leave the world and battles to the player's imaginations like you could in 2D.

The problem has always been that Pokemon has more potential than can be achieved in video games. Video games are still too limited for a Pokemon game to be anything more than an abstraction of something much more dynamic and complex.

But unlike most games, Pokemon has the anime to expand on the world and the battles, which is turn what people use to fill in the gaps while playing the games.

The interactive medium as it currently exists will truly be able to be able to bring a world like Pokemon to life.

I think if they slowed the development cycle for the games down they'd be alright. DLC and expansion packs would give them the opportunity to extend the lifetime of the generations now.

Except they never cared to cater to adults, releasing as they do ensures a steady stream of kids entering the franchise to keep the gravy train rolling. If you can't see by now the only thing that can stop it is a children of men, humanity becomes sterile situation, to cut off the supply of new players entering each release, you're not salvageable in any way, shape or form.
