Normal types are good due to having good STAB available as well as usually possessing relatively wide movepools (physical Shadow Ball, Dig, special punches etc.). Furret, Dunsparce, Ursaring, Stantler come to mind. Similar thing with water types thanks to Surf (Quagsire, Lanturn etc.).
Goldenrod offers good TMs in a form of elemental punches, Fire Ball and arguably Blizzard and Thunder. There are a few Pokemon early/mid game that can use these (e.g. Kadabra, Slowpoke line, Typloshion, Quagsire, Politoed, Gengar).
Legendary Beasts start at high level and have good stats so they are obvious choices.
Pokemon with huge offences work as well even if they don't have access to powerful STAB moves. Scizor, Heracross, Espeon come to mind.
