Gen 7 OU was terrible for 3 years and only became good at the tail end of the gens life when Zygarde got banned.
After the Arena Trap ban the OU council did literally nothing for like 2 years.

The playerbase pretty much universally agrees that wish teleport clef is bad.
The only reason it hasn't been suspected yet is because they're not sure whether to suspect clef or teleport, or the wish/teleport combo.

Shadow Tag is considered inherently uncompetitive up to the point where even a shitty NFE like Gothorita can abuse it. No other abilities let worthless NFEs even be relevant in the first place so clearly trapping abilities are a special case. Wynaut may suck but who cares, we don't allow Goldeen with Horn Drill in OU either even though it would completely suck.

You can always find an example of something banned not actually being broken if you want to. Arceus isn't broken either if you only give it shit moves and Toxic Orb.

They didn't. Complex implies multiple conditions, like banning Speed Boost only on Blaziken, or Swift Swim only with Drizzle, or Baton Pass only on Speed boosters. Shadow Tag is a simple ban; you're not allowed to use Shadow Tag, full stop.

I do but only for this meta. It's a quirk of the limited Gen VIII format where the best special wallbreakers are exploitable by Clefable or a partner.
I don't think teleport is as bad in practice on the natdex format, although it's degenerate nonetheless.

Walls that would have a very exploitable weakness of having no recovery suddenly have a fairly reliable form of recovery.
Wallbreakers that only have enough bulk to live a hit or two suddenly have much more defensive utility.
Skillfull play is reduced because you can play like a retard under the assumption that you can just wishpass to your mons later.

With a trapper, all you need is to win a single 50/50 (basically the equivalent to a game of rock paper scissors) and you can take out a massive threat on the opponent's side.
Smogon's goal is to make sure the best player wins.

Trapping is hilariously low risk for how high reward it is.
You literally just U-Turn on the bait Pokemon you want to trap and then you gain a massive advantage for free with 0 counterplay. You can pretend Shed Shell is worth it if you want but it really doesn't make any odds and is never truly worth running.

There’s better you can do off a volt/turn than trap. There are a lot of things that can win outright in the same scenario. Example:
You scout landlorus for fly/zfly, he doesn’t have it. You bait out Lando with koko and u turn out into hawlucha. Now you win the game on the spot.

I agree trapping is OP but this is just really flawed reasoning.

Trapping produces a serious advantage for the trapping team who are removing some serious threat to their team for free.
In the given example the player on the backfoot has to find a way to deal with Hawlucha that still has yet to set up, but he has every tool in his team to try to deal with it.
