Pokemon is too big to fall. The possibility of a better pokemon game/franchise falls entirely on Gamefreak/TPC's hands, and they have no monetary incentive to do so.

Yokai Watch was doing really well in Japan for awhile. It doesn't look like it had the legs of long-term staying power though.

It had a lot of potential early on, and then the devs decided to make everything grindier and more expensive multiple times. They made things like IV breeding items MUCH more expensive for no reason and made it much harder to get into the competitive side without excessive grinding that we haven't seen since fucking BW

It doesn't help that they ban you for whatever the fuck (including using glitches that weren't obviously unintended) and the content they add is shaky at best

Yokai Watch could've stayed a long-term thing. The problem is Level 5 doesn't ever know how to handle their own IPs, and often end up running them in to the ground as the series starts taking off. Didn't
