I think Gen 3 was the last generation where the new Pokemon's sprites were designed before any artwork.

banette's is the one one i can call truly bad. it's like they needed until gen 4 to plan a final design for it

gen 3 shuppet is a bit different than modern shuppet too

Because the truth is gen 3 was lazy and badly designed as a whole, that's why emerald is held in such high esteem, ruby and saphire were lazily made trash

Emerald did prove and tidy up RS but it was not massively different. I never understand why people hold any third version with such reverence over the others. Yes a third version is the GOTY-Definitive version and is technically better but they don't deviate that much. Platinum is just as slow and sluggish as DP despite the improvements, for example.

I agree, you can polish a turd but it's still shit as is RBE and DPP, but Emerald and Platinum for that matter where massive improvements on the garbage gamefreak released originally, which is why platinum added a bunch of fire types after a grand total of 3 in DP

Even GF knew that so they changed some sprites in FRLG.
Also, you can see the differences (in shading) between RSE and FRLG sprites (and even artworks).

And for that matter I don't really see what's wrong with banette's sprite. There are some ruby and sapphire sprites that I consider to be truly absolutely fucking awful (Growlithe is the one that always fucking hurts to look at when I see it) but none of the hoenn pokemon really seem like that for me.
