Which mainline game has the most replay value?
I feel like playing some good old Pocket Monsters to pass the time, convince me to play your favourite.
Also, any ideas to make the playthrough more unique beyond basic nuzlocke stuff?

that depends on what irritates you the most
if it's plot and cut-scene stuff, then Gen 5+ is pretty much out of the window
if it's slow speed then Gen 4 is unacceptable
if it's HMs then Gens 2 and 3 are annoying with three different water HMs and Gen 4 is a total slog
if it's outdated mechanics then older games are going to be a pain

I've been playing since G/S so I can deal with old mechanics/HMs.
Regarding cut-scenes, only Gen 7 is unbearable.
Is there any good vanilla-esque hack that brings modern stuff to old games? Otherwise I'll probably just roll a dice or something.

Nah man all the games in that engine are as slow as each other, the only thing that's significantly worse in DP is Surf speed.

At best there's things like FireRed ROMhacks with all the Pokemon up to Gen 8 available and updated mechanics, but that comes with the issue of every Pokemon needing to be somehow obtained within the game - leading to a bit of clutter.

Platinum or Emerald

Both have big regions with a good amount of pokemon and take place before gen 5 started bombarding us with story with every step you take, gen 5 is also solid but feels more linear and only BW2 are really worth playing over. 3, 4, and 5 have plenty of extra content to do as well, like battle frontier or collecting legendary pokemon. I've always felt more accomplishment from gen 3 and 4 than later gens that rely more on multiplayer for content. Gens 7 and 8 are absolutely unplayable with the amount of dialog breaks and cutscenese in the way of gameplay

I find emerald to be pretty replayable, but can't do it too often because some things get old. Try a monotype nuzlocke maybe. Tip: if you do RSE monotype nuzlocke grass is impossible and probably bug and poison are too.

plat emerald and bw2 are the best to replay to me, they have the most shit to do by far and their end game content is rather good ontop of that.

I love hg/ss but kanto on a replay isn't the best.

i hate to say it, but gens 4/5 have great replay value

5 is nice if you, like me, didn't like it as a kid cause "pokemon new!!! scary!!" since its nice going in without remembering much

platinum is nice to play with a friend, since it has a lot of optional minigames (poffins, contests, underground) that make the world feel more fleshed out

hgss are just soul, period

Im gonna say platinum, emerald and the Gen 5 games (especially since it’s possible to experience the in game mythical events which is easier with gen 5 nowadays) as those games have a-lot more things to do and have some semblance of explorations. That aside that art is just amazing and now i want to use my shiny Registeel I have in my platinum save more.

So it's down to Emerald, Platinum, or BW2. But the last game I played was Platinum like a year ago, so that leaves Fug's game vs Ayy lmao dragons.
Tough choice. Is PokéStar Studios any good
I never actually did any movie beyond the one they force on you the first time you go in, but I remember very fondly Emerald's Contests.

RSE always had the most replay in my opinion because you can kinda pick your own pacing. A lot of areas are optional and you can skip some shit if you wanna just get on with the games progression or if you wanna leave it till later, or you can take the time to do it if you're in the mood for long stretches of uninterrupted gameplay. Shit like Brawley's gym then cycling road to start out with, then larger areas like route 117 and verdanturf or the desert area later, and the best part for me is that after the 5th badge routes 105 through 109 as well as the abandoned ship can either be done immediately in succession or skipped by taking a quick detour through route 103. The best part is that both paths take you to where you need to go next and also take you by the trick house, another completely optional area. It's thoughtful map design like that, that accommodates 2 different play styles while also having a good flow to it that makes the game so smooth to replay for me, on top of a lot of other things. Hell if water routes aren't your thing you can skip most of them, a lot of dungeons are 100% optional too, it's great, can be a 15 hour adventure or a 30 hour adventure depending on what you're in the mood for
