Had a random urge to play pokemon again but not the games, just combat. Only finished red and gold so I'm missing 6 generations. Started a few after that but never finished them. How do I get back to it and learn the new pokemon/abilities/attacks?

Decide what gen/format you want to play and then read the Smogon analysis pages for all relevant Pokemon. Every time you see a move/ability/item whatever that confuses you simply look up its description.

Also learn the type chart by heart and all sorts of other mechanics like Dark types being immune to Prankster from gen 7 onwards should come with some more experience. There's probably a place that documents the important mechanical changes from each gen too.

Watch PokeaimMD's channel on YT, he's really embedded in competitive and does well himself, even topping multiple ladders and affecting Pokemon usage stats multiple times. His OU showcase videos are really educational for newer players, and he explains his plays and decisions and such well.

I got into competitive watching shofu, but he isn't as relevant anymore since he's very rusty with competitive.

It depends how competitive you want to be. If you just want to battle and have fun you dolls do so with friends. If you want to play online and not get shit on you probably need to go full autism, or at the very least copy a competitive team and learn the ins and outs of it

Op here. Don't want to be 100% autistic/competitive but at least I want to play vs people that knows what they are doing. Only one of my friends would be interested but he's the usual "copy the top rated team/strategy, lose because he has no idea how it works and never play again"

There are a lot of formats, so deciding between vgc and smogon tiers should be your first step. One you decide how you want to play, find a streamer or youtuber that you like and trust. I know Wolfe Glick puts out a lot of good stuff in the vgc community. From there pick a team and grind, the rest will come with experience
