Things I liked
>Green: Cocky, but you still get the impression that he's your friend. He's legitimately skilled, makes it to the top, and is quickly dethroned by you in the ultimate test. He is your first battle as well as your last.
>Silver: An actual asshole who starts off without any redeeming traits. Unlike Green, later victories against him begin to seriously affect him, and by Victory Road, he has begun to see you not only as an equal, but maybe even better than him. He becomes a respectable Trainer, even if he retains a bit of his edge.
I didn't play ORAS, so this is my thoughts on RSE Brendan/May (mostly May since I played as Brendan) and RSE Wally.
>Brendan/May: Pushovers. Brendan is apparently a little more competitive, but they're both very underdeveloped as both rivals and characters.
>Wally: The idea is nice enough, of a sickly boy going onto become a legitimate threat, but Gen III handles him poorly. He barely gets any screentime, and only really serves to replace Brendan/May after they give up. It was hard for me to even consider him as a rival as a kid. He was just a Trainer with a unique sprite.
>Barry: He's kind of a lovable hothead. He's the first childhood friend since Green, so you feel an inherent connection. He speaks his mind and he doesn't hold back, and his goal is to surpass his Frontier Brain father. In some ways, I'm reminded of Silver. In the Spaceworld demo, Silver is actually similar to Barry in personality, and in the final games, you can see Silver's character growth in his team by his use of Crobat. Similarly, Barry has a Heracross and Munchlax, Pokémon that require a huge amount of patience to obtain.
ORAS Wally seems to be handled similarly well by giving him a Mega Gallade, a heroic Pokémon that better exemplifies his character growth.
