If I have a bag of 1,000 marbles with 300 red, 200 blue, and 500 green, then I took 100 marbles at random, what likely will happen is that I get 30+- red, 20+- blue, and 50+- green.
Sure, you can get 1 red, 1 blue, and 98 green, but the how likely I would get that combination is far less than 30,20,50.
The original claim was that far more attendees were showing up for VGC this year than previous, using a US VGC event this year to a Swedish event in 2019.
Yes, it is indeed true that 574 > 29, but the original comparison is VGC2020 Attendees on average > [most populated VGC average], which assumes globally.
Of course, when you take a country as large as the US and compare totals to a much smaller country, the US likely will have a larger number (if it’s less, then that is abnormal).
When you compare them by scales, it’s more honest of a comparison.
Also, assuming that they would be equal to then find that the scale of attendees is much smaller than the scale of population just blows the assertion made before out of the water.
