Most mainline tier lists on /vp/ often show HGSS, B2W2, Platinum and Emerald in the S tier range so we can at least roughly gauge what the peak of the series was.

Yep, you’re right! Game Freak shouldn’t even try to make anybody happy. Quality is entirely objective so who’s to say that magikarp jump isn’t the best game in the series? I personally will buy completely empty game cartridges just to keep the nice people at GF employed.

People can't agree on what the best gen is because Gamefreak has a 1 step forward, 2 steps back mentality to making games. Improvements and features are left behind and don't carry over to new games for absolutely no reason. There is no way to tell which Gen was an objective improvement on the last.
Arguably, only Gen 2 is a straight improvement on Gen 1, and even that's debatable because the fights are much worse.

This isn't too far off the mark. While not "bad", none of the mainline games have made me actively want to play them more than once, so I wouldn't call them that "good" either. A shaky exception being the Johto games, but that's just preference.

I've recently tried to play Platinum since I've only gone through Diamond before, but I lost interest after the first gym.

I don't think there's any excitement or replay value to these games, and that's pretty bad... but your first experience with any given title can be "good".

case. it's ONLY challenge in Leon is also undone at that point since you'll know what to expect.
