I agree this was a stupid move, almost like a reactionary middle finger to the alt right, but it just comes across as another example of forced diversity, or minority-representation. Just let the fucking kid be white, and then the black kid has to have a white father? Black kids had no problem identifying with Ash when they thought he was white.

It was a solid 7.5/10 or 8/10. Differed completely from the game but it was by no means awful. They throw in some clever nods for the fans such as implications that Ditto is a Mew clone, which is an idea thrown about that most probably wouldn't know about if they weren't fans. I can't remember many other specifics from the movie since I only saw it when it came out in theatres, but there's probably other things.

The acting of loads of people is super cheesy, over the top and a lot just seem like cardboard cutouts, though some select people are good, like Justice Smith and Bill Neigh I think his name is? The Pokemon feel like they’re there most of the time aside from a few like the emolga’s but I think while it’s not amazing, it’s fun and worth a watch at least

As a movie it was fine, but as a pokemon movie it's awful. Maybe it's a faithful adaptation of the Detective Pikachu game, but it's nothing like the main series games, anime, manga, or anything else really. No one has ore than one pokemon, battling is banned, and you hardly explore anything outside of the city or the nearby outskirts.
It's also disturbingly sexual at times (mainly blame Ryan Reynolds for that). I've never been so uncomfortable while watching a kids movie like that.

There are some parts of it that made me cringe, like psyduck using psychic type attacks against dark pokemon (they didn’t exactly do their due diligence researching type matchups)

But I think there were some interesting design takes for the real world pokemon some notably worse than others, namely giving mewtwo teeth and giving gengar smile lines . The plot was fucking boring. I’m willing to see a sequel because there was some fun world building and nods to Pokédex entries Torterra scene .

You should give it a watch if you like pokemon but don’t expect higher art.

The ones in the movie are genetically modified. There's an evil lab that does testing and experiments on them trying to make them stronger than they were and blah blah blah, but yes im aware of the earth turtle lore, but these ones are unnaturally large.
