They could still distribute items that unlocks mini adventures in which we find and catch those pokemon vía wi-fi, instead of a mailman unceremoniously giving said strong and rare pokemon like it's nothing.
Or at least we sould be allowed to see that mailman's quest to find and catch those pokemon, it would be interesting, at least better than what we have now.

The idea is that Mew was a secret Pokemon. Not even Nintendo knew about it. it wasn't until Gamefreak said that there's a secret #152 pokemon which created an incredible new hype for the games where players started to play the game looking for it.

In the west, Mew was still a secret pokemon until some magazines reported it and started writing ways to get Mew.

Unlike everything since Gen6 where Gamefreak goes out ot the public "lol connect to the internet to get your new mythical XD"

You're a trainer, ferried away to a mysterious island, and as you explore forward you come across a legendary standing in your path, and now it's your chance to try and catch it. It's an experience. A small one, but it's an experience. Far better than being told 'Oh, hey! Someone left this for you, it's one of the rarest and most secret legendaries! Enjoy!'

They were major events, for the most part, with hype around them to a place you actually had to travel to; plus there wasn't any alternative you could do. Mew was put into the game incredibly last minute with certain staff not even knowing he was implemented, so it's not like they could put more code in your game that wasn't already there. They're just trading you a Pokemon that's already in the data.

The fact that there was a secret regularly unobtainable Pokemon was a novelty at the time too. It's worn off since then like a lot of other things that were cool in the first few games that have become less cool overtime.

As a kid, I went to PCNY for Deoxys, Pokemon Rocks America for Ho-oh and Lugia, and the 10th Anniversary event for Celebi. Shit was epic - some of my best memories with the franchise. Now it’s all just boring distribution events. Props to PoGo for keeping in-person events alive.

I was a fan of the series back then and just called them event legendaries. Now that there's an official term for them, however, I use that because there's no ambiguity. Any legendary you get from an event (shiny suicune for example) could be considered an event legendary, but if you say "I got a mythical pokemon" anyone knows you're referring so the specific subset of legendaries that are only distributed through events, cannot be traded on the GTS, and cannot be used in official tournaments.

There are too many desu, and more importantly they are too widely available. Mythicals (idc, I'm calling them mythicals) suck ass and have 0 substance at all. Victini was the last one I gave a shit about but even then, only mew had any business existing, everything else just filled the quota. Legendaries are worse off, not only are they impossible to miss in the main game, they are handed out for free in subsequent games. Seriously I fucking DESPISE how games will let you hunt loads of legendaries as """"post game content""""
You shouldn't be able to catch legendaries in any game other than the one they are native to, with rare exceptions if there's an actual decent mission and whole chunk of content dedicated to it. They also should be optional, the Regis are my favorite legendaries not because memes, but because they are the only one's that are reasonably out of the way everytime, and always completely optional. Granted, the original gen 3 games aree the only one's that truly handled it right, truly made them feel legendary, and it made kyogre and groudon feel like exceptions rather than the new norm
