I feel like Fire Red is a good game to get into pokemon, simple, but with enough things to keep you entertained. But if the friend isn't into older games, Sun/Moon is also fine, it's very beginner friendly, and the whole cutscenes thing is only really a problem when you replay it.

Having only played it once, no. They're awful the first time, too. The only reason to start a newcomer on S/M would be to set their expectations for the protagonist low, because that seems to be GF's new standard anyway. It sure would be nice to be the main character again, instead of riding some NPCs coattails.

It also has the best tutorial in a mainline Pokémon game. If only the latest games took note and kept Teachy TV rather than making them Teachy TV: The Game.
