Not sure how business minded you are but risk is a very important factor in marketing a product. If I could make a game as low quality as Pacman that would generate sales of say, $10 million, why should I risk pumping more money into a project for children (knowing full well they are more likely to play games with vibrant colours and simple mechanics), and generating a measly $4 million. Think about it.

Why NOT make it look like this though? You catch the kid audience because Pokémon, and then you catch the adult audience (many of whom played Pokémon when they were younger) because they value graphics in a video game. Not to mention that Pokémon has money coming out their ass, so the "but it would be more expensive to make" argument is no excuse.

The Picture OP put is bad as Pokémon already is, since there's no artistic effort and it doesn't even match Pokémon usual standards.

Pokémon should have better visuals, but something that fits. You doens't compare Pokémon to Call of Duty realism, you compare Pokémon to things like Mario, Okami, Digimon and Zelda.
