Alright /vp/, this is a follow up to a post I made earlier. In this thread, discuss pros and cons of SuMo and USUM and which one would be better to play first time.

I've been thinking about getting a Gen 7 game for a while now, and we're gonna break them down.

I like Su/Mo's story a little more, since it's a little more grounded in terms of not using characters from other games. Besides that I think US/UM are better games with far more content, so I would go with them if buying them if you've ever played an Alola game.

These two are base SM. Rainbow Rocket and Ultra Necrozma were fun, but they ruined Lusamine by giving her some semblance of justification, which in turn also seriously harmed Lillie and Gladion's arcs.

As a game, however, USUM are much better. More options and more things to do with those options, as well as higher difficulty.

Gen 7 is one of my favorites. I'd recommend anyone who cares about story in Pokemon to play SM first, and beyond that stick to USUM.

I think USUM are better than SM but I would like to note that misdreavus is obtainable very early into SM whereas in USUM it's postgame only. idk how much you care about misdreavus but if misdreavus is one of your favorites and you want to play through alola with misdreavus then play SM

Sun and Moon has better main story plot wise. It's more focused on characters that somewhat got shafted for the change in plot to ultra. That said, it isn't a big difference worth playing both games. Ultra also has a lot more side content. Like little sidequest mini stories that flesh out the region and give some rare pokemon or items.

Definitely ultra. The dex is expanded like in most second versions. They even get better move selection since mantine surf gives you move tutor lists throughout the main game. That might get you to try out pokemon that you wouldn't due to more workable movesets. The magnetic field evos and crabominable also evolve earlier in ultra.
>Better postgame
Sun and Moon has looker missions where you search for ultra beasts (in random encounters though) and talk to/ battle a few characters around Alola. It ties into cleaning up after the mess the villain made.
Ultra relegates the ultra beasts to their own small worlds bar blacephalon and stakataka. Those two are the same as above. They do get their own worlds and music though which is nice. Rainbow rocket is nice as it sort of adds an extra dungeon and some bosses. There's also some postgame sidequests.

Ultra. Aside from the stuff from earlier, the enemy teams also have better movesets. SM really only has a better story in some parts.
>Overall rating
Both can be decent games if you can get through the dialogue. If that doesn't bother you too much it should be fine. I personally liked some of the optional dialogue for fleshing out Alola a bit more. A bit odd, but the pokedex entries were pretty fun. Ultra can actually be one of the tougher pokemon games boss wise even if that's not saying much.

If you have access to homebrew, you could use PKHex and save backups to transfer your Pokémon between every single generation without paying a dime. That said, I think it's hardly worth it. I find there's charm in having the Pokémon stay in the generation you traveled with them, makes going back to old saves feel more nostalgic. Utility wise, there's not much point in transferring besides multiplayer and the occasional event mons like DP Regigigas and BW Zoroark.

Sun and Moon by a small margin. I still like what USUM does, but it feels a bit more incoherent than SM given that Lusamine isn't a psychotic freak.

They're relatively equal, but I'll give it to SM because Lusamine was better integrated with her characterization.

USUM by a mile. Also gives out tutor moves as you go along with an easy BP grinder.

USUM by a mile and a half. Rainbow Rocket gives a lot more than the Looker missions. However, I find myself radically bored with the game the moment their postgames have ended, partially due to the fact that the online meta for Gen 7 is garbage as the Festival Plaza is a steaming pile of shit.

USUM once more by a mile.
>Overall Ratings
I'd give S/M like a 7/10. It isn't necessarily bad but it isn't great. USUM may have lost a bit of story value compared to S/M, it's most certainly the definitive Gen 7 experience and that overall invalidates the value S/M really has. 7.5/10, not peak Pokemon, but among its better moments as of recent years, and so much better than Sword and Shield.

Well Gen 7 actually has a story, unlike Gen 8. So 7 wins by default

Gen 7 for the same reasons as above

Gen 8. Plus with the Max Raid mechanics, you can get a lot of Pokemon a lot earlier than you would expect

They're both shit so it really doesn't matter in this case.

USUM does because it's Battle Tower equlivant isn't completely butchered.

Whatever. They're both Nu-Pokemon games so they're fairly "inoffensive" if you expect a simply Pokemon adventure.

Neither of the games will take long to beat since they both heavily encourage you to just rush through their boring route design.
