The issue with Gen V were the fucking designs. Yes, there're some cool ones like Haxorus, Hydreigon, Zorua, Excadrill but there are also lots of them that are just so ugly that it hurts to see them.
I remember that I went to play this game as soon as it was released, I didn't knew anything about the dex or the Pokémons just that it was "all new" and I was OK with that.
I started the game and saw the starters... The Water one is the ugliest piece of crap I have ever seen (yeah Samurott is cool, but I didn't knew that when I saw it the first time), Tepig was... OK I guess and Snivy was cute. Went for Snivy.
Started my journey, saw a fucking Pidgeon and it was OK, I kept going till I saw this piece of shit.
I swear to you guys the moment I saw that I was left in shock, this is the most ugly piece of crap I have ever seen in my entire life. I was diagnosed with a tumor and I swear to you that the memories of that time aren't comparable of what I feel when I see that shit.
The worse thing? They named it Woobat. Because it was like Zubat, but not Zubat, so it's not only ugly but the name is the most uninspiring shit ever.
I saw that design, that name, closed the game, went for a coffee, then took a nap, and never played again that game till this quarantine when I finally finished it.
Gen V has some awesome designs but most of them are crap. That being said, story wise and game wise Black 2 stands as one of my Top Pokémon games ever but holy shit those designs are the main fault of all the hate that gen is getting.
