>>43569333Marnie was a plot device to "legitimize" Team Yell as the antagonist group for the first part of the game, to connect the player character to Piers, to give the player a proper opponent in the semifinals, to give a Dark-type Gigantamax (in her case, Grimmsnarl) to a major character without compromising Piers's choice to not use Dynamax, and to replace Piers as Gym Leader after he retires. She has no role or character outside of that. Marnie is an add-on to Piers's character, and frankly she wasn't even needed in the story or games. She had a very minimal role in the story. The only interesting thing about her aside from being the second Dark-type Gym Leader is that she never uses a mono-Dark team, as Toxicroak isn't Dark. (Ironic given Piers uses an actual Poison/Dark Pokemon in Skuntank, and how many Dark-types this game actually had.) Her theme and design are great, and her inclusion in the game actually made Morpeko a better Pokemon competitively in large part because she is the first rival to have her own Pikaclone. She also made Gigantamax Grimmsnarl a thing, when Piers would have had Gigantmax Obstagoon had he Dynamaxed. So, Marnie's role outside of her character are great. Marnie's role *as* a character is shit.
